How Red Bull feel about Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo’s futures after the Dutch Grand Prix

While all the attention has been on Logan Sargeant’s immediate Formula 1 future, two drivers could be joining him in losing their seats before the end of the 2024 season.

Red Bull and the sister RB team had another difficult weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen extracted all the potential out of his RB20 but was no match for Lando Norris who went on to win the second race of his Formula 1 career.

His teammate Sergio Perez produced a better showing in qualifying but still went backwards during Sunday’s Grand Prix despite having a faster floor setup than the Dutchman.

It was another pointless weekend for RB with Yuki Tsunoda outperforming Daniel Ricciardo in qualifying before being put on a disastrous strategy that ended his hopes of scoring points.

The Australian was running closer to the top ten but was never in contention of adding to his tally of 12 points for the campaign.

A report from The Race’s YouTube channel shared how the Red Bull group felt about Ricciardo and Perez’s performances at Zandvoort.

Perez survived a vote of confidence during the summer break to retain his race seat while Ricciardo still hasn’t signed a contract for 2025.

Liam Lawson has been promised a seat by Helmut Marko for next year which will keep both drivers on their toes heading to Monza this weekend.

Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo’s immediate futures explained after the Dutch Grand Prix

Journalist Ben Anderson was speaking about the situation after the race at Zandvoort and said: “Lawson would be the ideal stand-in for Williams now but that’s not clear cut by any means partly because of Red Bull’s own uncertain situation.

“Red Bull may need Lawson itself before the end of the year, a driver shake-up with either Sergio Perez or Daniel Ricciardo being replaced in season cannot be ruled out.

“In either case, Lawson would find himself on the 2024 grid in one of the Red Bull teams.

“Perez was better at Zandvoort before the summer break and 6th was his best result since May’s Miami Grand Prix.

“But, he still trailed Max Verstappen by a big margin even though he had a faster floor specification the team reckoned to be worth 0.2 seconds.

“Meanwhile, Ricciardo had another topsy-turvy weekend in which he was knocked out of qualifying in Q1 but then had a better Grand Prix.

“Red Bull’s a bit lost with its drivers at the moment and from what we were told at Zandvoort, neither Red Bull team is 100% sure what its driver line-up will be after September.”

That coincides with a three-week break in the schedule between Singapore and Austin where both teams would most likely make a change for the final six races of the campaign.

Liam Lawson’s immediate F1 plans suggest all is not well at Red Bull

Lawson has been linked with the potentially vacant Williams seat after Sargeant’s disappointing weekend at Zandvoort.

Marko has said that he would be open to Lawson driving for Williams for the rest of the season even though a 2025 seat isn’t on the cards due to the signing of Carlos Sainz.

However, Red Bull want to have the chance to recall Lawson if they need him before the end of the 2024 campaign.

That’s likely to put James Vowles off signing the Kiwi and sends a worrying message to Perez and Ricciardo.

Red Bull will lose the Constructors’ Championship at this rate but asking Lawson – or Ricciardo – to immediately step up and improve on Perez’s results is a huge task.

It’s a choice Christian Horner will have to consider going forward though.
