‘Wind is blowing against’ driver replacing Logan Sargeant at Williams after Dutch Grand Prix mistake

The biggest talk point in the Formula 1 driver’s market is surrounding a seat that has already been confirmed for 2025.

Williams have already replaced Logan Sargeant for next season by bringing in Carlos Sainz from Ferrari.

However, after another disappointing weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix, Sargeant appears as though his time in F1 might come to an end sooner than the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Taking to social media in the aftermath of the race, journalist Thomas Maher provided an update on who could replace Sargeant, potentially as soon as the Italian Grand Prix.

Red Bull star Liam Lawson is a prime candidate for the role, but Williams team principal James Vowles has a serious concern about the terms of a potential deal.

It means another driver with F1 experience waiting in the wings may now be the preferred candidate.

Liam Lawson looking less likely to replace Logan Sargeant at Williams

Vowles has never guaranteed that Sargeant would complete the season even after finding a permanent replacement in Sainz for 2025.

However, an incredibly costly and unnecessary crash during the final practice session at Zandvoort has only put further pressure on the only driver who hasn’t scored a point this season, aside from the Sauber pair.

Talking about the driver situation at Williams, Maher said: “No decisions made yet regarding a possible Williams change for this weekend but wind is blowing against a Lawson switch as Red Bull wish to be able to pull him back if needed.

“Vowles understood to not be on board with this, meaning Schumacher more likely.

“Obviously this is still only IF Williams commit to getting someone else in the car for Monza, which isn’t certain. Plenty to be figured out in the next 36 hours or so.”

James Vowles has previously rejected Mick Schumacher at Williams

There are a host of drivers who would love to take Sargeant’s seat for the rest of the campaign even if it doesn’t guarantee a drive beyond 2024.

Formula 1 cameos are incredibly hard to come by but tend to lead to a race seat eventually, with Nyck de Vries benefitting from a Williams cameo in 2022 and Lawson confirmed to be in a Red Bull car next year after stepping in for the injured Daniel Ricciardo last year.

Mick Schumacher will be hoping that he can replicate that success if he’s the chosen driver to replace Sargeant.

His two years of F1 experience work in his favour especially as so many of the alternatives would be less experienced than the outgoing Sargeant.

However, Vowles has previously rejected signing Schumacher this year when searching for an alternative to the American for 2025.

Whether he’s therefore got the required amount of faith in the German to put him in the car for the final nine races is yet to be seen.

Toto Wolff will be encouraging Vowles to give the 25-year-old a chance and at this stage, it’s barely a gamble given how unlikely Sargeant looks to secure a top-ten finish before the end of the campaign.
