There is a lot of discussions over who will partner Max Verstappen in 2025 amid a poor run of form for Sergio Perez.

Red Bull gave Sergio Perez a lifeline when Christian Horner confirmed he would stay as part of their lineup after the summer break, but for how long remains to be seen.

Perez has effectively the next few races to improve with Red Bull giving him an older specification car in an attempt to help get him back up to speed, but in the background, there is a lot of work going on.

Daniel Ricciardo has so far not impressed enough to be considered a viable replacement to Perez, and now he could also be under threat if he does not score more points for Visa CashApp RB.

This leaves Liam Lawson with a chance of earning a promotion, having impressed during his brief stint replacing the injured Ricciardo last year. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko offered an exciting update when speaking to Kleine Zeitung.

Liam Lawson plans reveled by Helmut Marko

Lawson reportedly has a clause in his contract that says he can leave Red Bull if he doesn’t get a seat, potentially taking knowledge of their operation to a rival team.

The New Zealander has not had a full-time race seat this season, but he has been a critical part of their operations behind the scenes by putting in simulator work and carrying out media duties.

Marko already confirmed they will reveal their plans for Lawson in September, but he offered another exciting update on the progress.

“There will be a decision in September,” said Marko. “He’s [Lawson] sitting completely in one of our cars next year.”

Daniel Ricciardo responds to Helmut Marko comments

In the queue to replace the Mexican, Ricciardo is reported to be ahead of Lawson. However it remains to be seen whether Perez can close the points gap to Verstappen at tracks he has historically been strong at like Singapore and Azerbaijan.

Responding to the comments made by Marko at the Dutch GP this weekend, Ricciardo told Motorsport Total: “I think [Liam] deserves a place on the grid.

“Performance is my best friend. If I perform, then I’m sure they’ll find a place for me somewhere.”

Ricciardo added that he wants to stay “in the family” referring to Red Bull, but admitted that he might not have done enough to make the call a no-brainer for the team.

“I appreciate that it wasn’t [enough] over the course of the first half of the season,” said Ricciardo.

“It’s definitely better [now], but I can’t say this is definitely enough yet. I’m now going to make a song and dance and be like, ‘I’ve been the est, do something about it.’.”
