Flavio Briatore is playing mind games with Lawrence Stroll and Aston Martin, which is one of the reasons he reportedly leaked Alpine’s interest in Fernando Alonso.
Alonso has been pushing Aston Martin to fix their issues behind the scenes, as the veteran driver looks to get back on track this season.
Despite this, Lawrence Stroll isn’t worried about Alonso joining Alpine despite rumours suggesting that Flavio Briatore wants to coax the Spaniard into a return next year.

Flavio Briatore is pushing Lawrence Stroll to ‘hurry up and prepare a fast car’
According to Autosport Web, Flavio Briatore is motivated by multiple factors to try and derail Aston Martin’s ability to keep hold of Fernando Alonso.
For starters, Briatore making Alpine’s interest known shows Alonso that he is valued by other teams, which limits Lawrence Stroll’s ability to re-sign him on a low-cost contract.
Secondly, this is Alpine’s way of putting Aston Martin under pressure to improve their car, as Alonso is unlikely to stay with the team if he can’t ensure they can be competitive this or next season.
And lastly, Briatore may have leaked this information to put pressure on Franco Colapinto to improve his performances, as he is trying to get the best out of the Argentine.
Clearly, there are games being played by both sides right now. To counter this pressure, Lawrence Stroll is reportedly looking to offer Alonso a post-retirement role with Aston Martin.

Fernando Alonso’s timeline to make F1 future decision could cost Aston Martin greatly
Autosport Web also reported that Alonso is keeping a close eye on both Aston Martin and Honda’s upgrades this season, and how they can help him compete.
Alonso is hoping the engine and chassis upgrades can at least allow him to reach Q2 in qualifying, thus giving him a competitive edge for the second half of the season.
On top of that, there is a belief that Adrian Newey’s planned overhaul of the AMR26 could be delayed till after the summer break, which would go against Alonso’s timeline to make a decision.
If this nightmare scenario comes to pass, Aston Martin could lose Fernando Alonso next season, all because of their failure to get their car and engine right.
