Lawrence Stroll could be set to lose Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin in 2027, but he may not have to worry with Sergio Perez available on the market.

Rumours have been rife about Alonso’s future in F1 with his contract set to expire in 2026. At 45 years old, many are wondering if the Spaniard will remain in the sport, especially with Aston Martin’s disastrous situation.

The Silverstone outfit have been struggling to complete races, let alone score points this season. Alonso wants to end his career on a high note, which has led to rumours that he could leave Aston Martin.

Alonso has been linked with a return to Alpine in 2027. With Lance Stroll most likely staying with Aston Martin, his father Lawrence Stroll will be wanting a top driver to replace the two-time champion, and the perfect one could find himself on the F1 driver market.

Lawrence Stroll already knows ‘fantastic’ Sergio Perez is a perfect replacement for Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin

Stroll has made it no secret that he is interested in a top driver to replace Alonso when he leaves Aston Martin. The likes of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc were linked, but those rumours have since quietened.

But should Alonso leave for Alpine, the Canadian businessman has a perfect replacement, and that is his former driver, Sergio Perez.

The Mexican spent seven years at Force India, later Racing Point under Stroll’s ownership. He left the team in 2021 as they rebranded to Aston Martin, and he knows just what a strong asset he is.

He said, via quotes from The Race, after his exit: “Checo has been a fantastic asset. He’s been an asset for this team a long time before I’ve arrived. I think he most definitely proves every weekend he deserves to be in the car next year and I hope he’s in that Red Bull next year.”

Perez went on to spend four years at Red Bull, helping the team achieve a one-two in the championship in 2023. But after struggling to find results as Max Verstappen’s teammate, he was let go for the 2025 season and took a year out of the paddock.

Now back on the grid with Cadillac in 2026, he is showing that he can be of great use. The 36-year-old is providing invaluable experience to F1’s newest team and is getting the better of teammate Valtteri Bottas under the new regulations.

He has finished all but one race thus far and seems to be getting the hang of the new ruleset. However, reports have suggested that he is already looking for a new challenge.

Perez is speaking to other teams in the paddock, suggesting that he is open to leaving Cadillac in 2027. If he is available, it is a no-brainer for Stroll to bring him back to his team should Alonso depart for Alpine.

Stroll knows Perez well and the talent and experience he can bring. He could be just what Aston Martin need to get them out of their current situation and back fighting for points and possibly even podiums.
