Juan Pablo Montoya has urged Fernando Alonso to remain at Aston Martin amid recent links to an Alpine move, citing that the Spaniard could potentially repeat his biggest career mistake.

During his home Grand Prix last weekend, rumours emerged inside the Barcelona paddock that a Fernando Alonso switch to Alpine was ‘gaining traction’.

The Enstone-based outfit has played a big part in the 44-year-old’s career, having won two world titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, as well as being the team that Alonso returned to F1 with in 2021 following a two-year sabbatical.

Alonso has made it clear that he will make a decision on his future in the sport after the summer break. Retirement has also been touted for the F1 veteran, with it also emerging that he is anything but calm behind-the-scenes at Aston Martin.

Juan Pablo Montoya urges Fernando Alonso to remain with Aston Martin next year

Speaking via AS Colombia, F1 pundit Juan Pablo Montoya gave his thoughts on the recent links involving Alonso. The seven-time Grand Prix winner fears the Spaniard will make the same damning career mistake as he did in the past with McLaren.

“I’d rather see Fernando stay put than go to Alpine,” Montoya said. “If Alpine were winning races or fighting for the podium, then I’d say, go for it. Alpine have made a very good step forward, but there are no guarantees they will be able to take the next step.

“It’s like Williams – last year, Williams made a huge leap forward, and we all expected them to be right in the thick of the fight by now. But they’ve gone in the opposite direction. So just imagine, if he leaves.

“That’s happened to Fernando before – he was at McLaren when they were doing terribly; he left for McLaren, and McLaren started performing better. That can happen again. He’s at Aston, and he might leave Aston, and suddenly they come out with a rocketship next year.

Aston Martin’s first performance upgrades are expected to land at the Belgian Grand Prix in July, which could give Alonso the first indication of whether the Silverstone-based outfit may be in more of a competitive position for next year’s campaign.

On top of that, Alonso isn’t the only driver who Flavio Briatore has been linked to regarding a seat at Alpine. Sergio Perez has also been mentioned at Aston Martin, and could receive backing from Adrian Newey following their past stint together at Red Bull.
