As rumours of Fernando Alonso’s potential exit from Aston Martin gather momentum, Lawrence Stroll is planning to offer him some perks to get him to stay.

At the start of the festivities at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix this weekend, Alonso dropped a hint on his F1 retirement and overall future in the sport.

Since he dropped this bombshell, Alonso was linked with a return to Alpine, who could be making a change to their driver lineup amid frustration with Franco Colapinto.

Even though the team are far from competitive, there’s no doubt that Aston Martin losing Fernando Alonso would be a huge blow to their future prospects.

Perhaps this is why Lawrence Stroll and Aston Martin are preparing to entice Alonso into staying by promising him something Alpine haven’t yet.

Aston Martin could entice Fernando Alonso to stay with promised post-retirement role

According to GPBlog, Aston Martin are well aware of Alpine’s interest in landing Fernando Alonso, and are ready to make the Spanish driver an interesting offer.

The two sides reportedly have a very good relationship, and Aston Martin want to keep hold of Alonso next year with a new contract offer.

This offer would presumably allow Alonso to extend his Formula 1 career. But the interesting detail is that Aston Martin could try to keep him by offering him a role with the team after he retires.

This role could be the same one that Pedro de la Rosa currently holds, who is an ambassador for Aston Martin and speaks on behalf of the team at several events.

With there being expected to be a restructuring of the Aston Martin management hierarchy soon, Aston Martin could give de la Rosa a different role and clear the ambassador title for Alonso when he decides to retire.

Would Fernando Alonso make a good team principal once he retires from F1?

Fernando Alonso will want to retire on a high note

Alonso isn’t the only driver on Flavio Briatore’s radar, as George Russell is also on Alpine’s shortlist. But his decision will come down to which team he can end his career with in the best way.

A rider of Alonso’s calibre and track record will want to ensure that he can compete at the highest level possible before he calls it a career.

Given that Alonso has struggled greatly with Aston Martin this season, he’s unlikely to want to stay if the team’s condition doesn’t improve before the end of the year.

With Alonso losing to Lance Stroll in qualifying at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, things are about as bad for him as can be at the moment.

However, Aston Martin are looking to introduce upgrades later in the season, which could drastically turn the team’s fortunes around, and could convince Alonso to stay with them and reject Alpine’s advances.
