Fernando Alonso’s rumoured talks with Alpine over a stunning comeback have drawn a mixed response from the team.
It emerged during the Barcelona Grand Prix weekend that Alonso could return to Alpine in 2027 with Aston Martin increasingly cut adrift at the back of the pack.
Alonso previously spent two years at Alpine after returning to the sport in 2021. More famously, he raced for forerunners Renault in the 2000s, where he won both of his world championships.

The links are strengthened by the involvement of Flavio Briatore, who has effectively been running Alpine since mid-2024 but is still Alonso’s manager. According to SPORT, he will do ‘everything possible’ to facilitate the move.
Ironically, Briatore likely played a role in Alonso leaving Enstone unexpectedly ahead of the 2023 season. The bombshell Aston Martin announcement shows just how unpredictable he can be.
While the team’s official line is that they are happy with Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, another Alpine source told the Spanish outlet ‘never say never’ when asked about the rumours.
SPORT had earlier reported that Aston Martin weren’t concerned about the story, which they said was ‘just speculation’.

Still, the fact remains that Alonso is out of contract at the end of the season and must be persuaded to stay put, if indeed he is to extend his career.
Based on his recent comments, Alonso would like to continue racing in F1 until he’s at least 46, but if he is to do so in green, Aston Martin must give him cause for optimism with their upgrades this summer.
Despite his upturn in form, Colapinto is likely to be the driver at risk if Alonso does express a willingness to join Alpine. Gasly signed a new contract last September and has scored 41 of the team’s 57 points so far this year.
At this stage, Alonso’s salary demands are a ‘stumbling block’ for a company who have been reducing their investment in motorsport – hence shutting down their F1 engine division and withdrawing from the WEC – but Briatore is the best advocate he could have.
While Alonso qualified last for his home race last weekend and retired, Alpine’s 2026 resurgence continued with a P7 finish for Gasly, maintaining his 100% scoring record when he sees the chequered flag.
