Aston Martin sent a ‘very difficult’ warning about hiring Andreas Seidl as Andy Cowell’s replacement

Aston Martin may be on the search for a new team boss after multiple reports that Andy Cowell could be moved to another position.

Cowell took over as team principal back in January, which makes it slightly surprising that his role is already under threat.

Aston Martin are preparing aggressively for the future, which has included hiring Adrian Newey to spearhead their efforts.

The 2026 F1 regulations mark a significant milestone for them, as they harbour hopes of competing for the drivers’ championship over the coming seasons.

Cowell’s relationship with Newey ‘faded’ after the sacking of a colleague in the aerodynamics department. The two had their disagreements.

On the other hand, Newey ‘wouldn’t have a problem’ working with Christian Horner, the ex-Red Bull boss with who he has enjoyed plenty of success with through the years.

Aston Martin told it’s ‘very difficult’ to find anyone ‘positive’ about Andreas Seidl

Aston Martin’s favourite to replace Cowell is Andreas Seidl, who has experience with two other projects over the last few years.

He oversaw part of McLaren’s resurgence before moving to Audi. Then, last summer, he vanished and hasn’t really been heard from since.

With Horner ‘pushing hard’ for Aston Martin, they certainly have a few options on the table. That’s if reports that Cowell is set to be moved are true.

But, the team have been served a warning about Seidl by journalist Erik van Haren, who revealed what he knows about the ex-Audi boss.

“I have to say, of course, another one is Audi, he [Seidl] was the head of the project. Now Binotto [is boss]. And before [that] he [Seidl] worked at McLaren,” he said on a Telesport podcast.

“But, if you talk to people behind the scenes at McLaren [or] Audi now, it’s very difficult to find anyone who is positive about him. So, I don’t know what’s out there.”

Why Aston Martin’s team principal rumours might be a bad thing

Since the team’s rebrand to Aston Martin from Racing Point back in 2021, they have had multiple team bosses.

A new one would be their fourth in four years, which indicates that there isn’t much stability as normally seen at a top team.

Otmar Szafnauer was their first team principal, but was replaced by Mike Krack for the 2022 campaign, before he too was moved to another part of the company to make way for Cowell.

A look at the likes of Mercedes, McLaren, and Red Bull for a long time, too, shows that having consistency in leadership counts for a lot. It’s something that Aston are still searching for.
