Timo Glock tells Red Bull what they must now do to avoid disastrous Max Verstappen exit

Red Bull Racing have lost their advantage in the Constructors’ Championship and Max Verstappen has spent several months looking over his shoulder as he aims to win his fourth Formula 1 title.

Max Verstappen entered the 2024 F1 season as the clear favourite having won all but three of last year’s Grand Prix, but Red Bull have seen McLaren surge past them in the development race while making their own mistakes along the way.

Sergio Perez has failed to live up to expectations alongside Verstappen, meaning Red Bull are playing catch up as they attempt to win the Constructors’ Championship for the third season running.

A problem that nearly everyone on the grid has faced has been effectively implementing their update packages without impacting the balance of the car.

Drivers have been forced to avoid pushing to their maximum capabilities because otherwise, they end up losing time as the car becomes impossible to drive.

McLaren appear to be the only team who have avoided this issue, although team principal Andrea Stella has been cautious about installing new updates to avoid falling into the same trap.

Former F1 driver and Sky Germany pundit Timo Glock has spoken to the press agency DPA, via FAZ, about Red Bull’s prospects over the final six races.

He believes that how Red Bull perform over the upcoming triple header will not only determine how many – if any – championships the team will walk away with this season, but how long Verstappen will consider staying at the team beyond the end of this campaign.

Timo Glock warns Red Bull about Max Verstappen ‘worst case scenario’

Explaining the issues Red Bull are facing, Glock said: “When good people leave a team, instability sets in. We’ve seen that with other racing teams too.

“An unhappy Max Verstappen would be the worst-case scenario for Red Bull, and he would certainly look elsewhere for the future. It would of course be depressing if you had such a lead and then lost out at the end.

“The next three races will definitely be decisive in which direction the World Championship will go, especially for Max Verstappen. But they will also be a bit decisive for the future.”

Verstappen has a fantastic record in Austin, Mexico City and Sao Paulo, with only Lewis Hamilton winning more races at the upcoming United States Grand Prix than he has.

That will give him confidence after outperforming expectations in Singapore to finish runner-up to Lando Norris.

However, nearly every team on the grid is bringing updates to the Sprint Race at the COTA which will put even more pressure on nailing the only hour-long practice session available.

The ‘magical’ RB20 update being brought to the United States Grand Prix

The Dutch media have been having their say on the update Red Bull are set to deliver.

Christian Horner previously admitted that he knew what problem Red Bull were trying to fix, but their lack of correlation with the data coming from the wind tunnel has proved to be an issue.

Helmut Marko has pointed out the difference in the quality of Red Bull’s drivers as an issue and Marko has since talked up Yuki Tsunoda’s chances of a promotion, highlighting that he thinks the team’s issues come from more than just the car.

However, a ‘magical’ update to Red Bull’s cars could be installed in Austin and the hope is that it will at least put them on the same level as McLaren.

That’s easier said than done though and if Verstappen isn’t convinced that the team know what they’re doing, then he may start to look at his options elsewhere on the grid.
