Max Verstappen is one of the most successful Formula 1 drivers of all time, so here is everything you need to know on the Red Bull driver making history and records in F1.

He completely rewrote the record books in the 2023 Formula 1 season en route to his third successive world championship. Verstappen won 19 of the 22 Grand Prix, to amass a record tally of 575 points. No driver had ever before won more than the 15 races he did over 2022.

The records continued to fall all year in 2023 as Verstappen also posted the longest winning streak with 10 races. He further set a record tally of 21 Grand Prix podiums, most wins from pole (12), most hat-tricks (6), most laps led (1,003), and the best win percentage at 86.36%.

Verstappen’s 86.36% win percentage beat Alberto Ascari’s record of 75% set in 1952. The Red Bull racer further won a record number of Sprint events with four wins out of the six in 2023. His season also culminated in setting the biggest title-winning margin at 290 points.

Records have gone Verstappen’s way ever since he debuted in Formula 1 for Toro Rosso. He became the youngest-ever Grand Prix pilot at 17 years and 166 days old at the Australian GP in 2015 and the youngest race winner at only 18 years and 228 days at the 2016 Spanish GP.

His victory at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya also came on Verstappen’s debut with Red Bull after replacing Daniil Kvyat. He graduated from the junior Toro Rosso team after just 23 Formula 1 races. Verstappen’s top result at Toro Rosso was P4 at the 2015 United States GP.

What also made Verstappen’s debut in Formula 1 at 17 all the more impressive was his lack of single-seater experience. Red Bull placed him in their junior team after just one season in cars. Verstappen also finished third in the 2014 FIA European Formula 3 Championship term.

Titles had gone Verstappen’s way ever since he first stepped into go-karts in 2005, however. He took the VAS Championship, Mini Junior class title in 2005 and 2006, along with multiple triumphs in Belgium and the Netherlands before taking the 2010 WSK Euro Series, KF3 title.

Championships continued to go Verstappen’s way across his karting days, with further titles in the various classes across the WSK World and Euro and the WSK Master Series, plus the CIK-FIA European and World championships. He won a total of 23 titles in his go-kart career.

At the time of writing, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen is 28 years old, and was born in 1997 on 30 September. He is the son of two former racing stars, with dad Jos Verstappen an ex-F1 driver at Benetton, Tyrrell, Arrows and Minardi and ex-karting star mum Sophie Kumpen.

Through his parents, Max Verstappen also holds dual nationality with the Netherlands and Belgium. He was also born in the Belgian city of Hasselt, the largest city in the province of Limburg. But Verstappen races under a Dutch licence like his dad, with his mother Belgian.

Max Verstappen has been dating his girlfriend, Kelly Piquet, since December 2020. She is the daughter of Formula 1 icon Nelson Piquet Sr, who won the title in 1981, 1983 and 1987. The Brazilian was, however, born in the German town of Homburg on December 7 in 1988.

Piquet is also a model among her varying professions, which have even included working as a stylist assistant for Vogue Latin America whilst living in New York. But she left the world of fashion behind in 2015 to be the social media strategist and a content creator for Formula E.

Verstappen is not the first F1 driver whom Piquet has dated, either. She confirmed in 2017 a previous relationship with Kvyat – the Russian who Verstappen replaced at Red Bull in 2016. Kvyat is also the father of Piquet’s daughter, Penelope, but the pair split in December 2019.

Verstappen and Piquet also revealed in December 2024 that the couple were expecting their first child together. But the idea of his first-born infant continuing the Verstappen and Piquet families’ motorsport legacies was not one Max liked, claiming at the time: “I really hope not.”

The couple announced the birth of their daughter Lily on 2 May 2025, following growing speculation that the baby had arrived. Verstappen had not attended media day for the Miami Grand Prix, with many assuming that Piquet had given birth.

And, as of May 2025, Forbes cited Verstappen’s net worth at $78m (£58m) thanks also to his further endorsements worth $5m (£4m). Yet Dutch magazine Quote even cited Verstappen’s net worth at $164m (£129m) in November 2023  as one of the Netherlands’ richest people.
