Martin Brundle’s scathing reaction to Max Verstappen’s radio message after Lewis Hamilton contact at Hungarian GP

The Hungarian Grand Prix didn’t go to plan for Red Bull driver Max Verstappen as he watched his closest rivals secure a fantastic result.

Lando Norris nearly won the Hungarian Grand Prix but handed the lead back to teammate Oscar Piastri for his maiden victory a few laps before the end of the race.

The Australian led throughout the first two stints before being undercut and struggled to catch back up to his teammate before he deliberately slowed down.

However, there were plenty of interesting battles happening behind the two McLarens and almost all of them involved Max Verstappen.

The triple world champion briefly ran second in the race after overtaking Norris through the opening corner, however, he was instructed by Red Bull to give the place back after gaining an advantage by going off the track.

That impacted Verstappen’s mood and it didn’t improve as the race went on.

Martin Brundle was commentating on the race for Sky Sports F1 and deliberated on arguably the key moment in Verstappen’s race.

The Dutchman had newer tyres than long-term rival Lewis Hamilton as they fought over the final place on the podium.

However, a poorly judged move heading into turn one saw Verstappen’s car pirouette through the air as Hamilton had no chance of avoiding the 26-year-old.

Hamilton’s Mercedes was unscathed by the incident but Verstappen lost a place to Charles Leclerc and was summoned to the stewards after being accused of causing a collision.

Verstappen even had a tense exchange with his race engineer when he was told after the race the medics needed to check him over such was the G-Force of the collision.

Martin Brundle’s hilarious response to angry Max Verstappen radio message in Hungary

When initially watching the incident going into the hairpin, Brundle said: “Wow, now you’re going to hear a grumpy Max Verstappen but I still he had to just keep the steering wheel straight to try and keep slowing the car down.

“He came in with such speed there. He hit the ground so hard there.

“If that’s anybody’s fault it’s Max’s fault, for Lewis, there are no recriminations there.”

Verstappen then said on the team radio responding to the clash: “He moved under braking.”

To which his race engineer replied: “I’m not even going to get into a fight with the other teams Max, we’ll let the stewards do their thing. It’s childish on the radio.”

David Croft pondered that there might be some words coming behind closed doors at Red Bull and McLaren after Norris took his time to give the lead back to Piastri.

Hearing Verstappen’s radio message, Brundle replied: “Pot kettle springs to mind.”

Max Verstappen loses ground in the F1 driver standings after Hungarian Grand Prix

The Hungarian Grand Prix could have ended in an even more frustrating position for Max Verstappen were it not for some fairness from Norris.

The Brit took his time but eventually gave the lead back to Piastri and therefore gave away seven points in the Drivers’ Championship.

It means if Verstappen retired from the next three races, Norris would need to win each of those Grand Prix and take the fastest lap at least once in that time.

However, the update package Red Bull brought to Hungary didn’t have the desired impact.

It’s hard to judge Sergio Perez’s race given where he started and for the Mexican to score points from 16th is a bonus.

But Verstappen was slower than Norris and Piastri and Red Bull need to work out how to close that gap to Mercedes after the summer break.
