Former Formula 1 driver Jarno Trulli has said if he was in charge of Mercedes, he would replace Lewis Hamilton with Fernando Alonso for the 2025 season.

The world of Formula 1 was shaken when it was announced that Lewis Hamilton would be joining Ferrari next season.

Speaking to Formula Passion, Trulli admitted the two-time world champion would be his preferred choice to drive for the Silver Arrows next year.

Trulli would choose Alonso to replace Hamilton at Mercedes

There are several massive storylines that are going to dominate Formula 1 in 2024 outside of what’s happening on track.

Martin Brundle has already admitted he will be keeping a close eye on the burgeoning relationship between Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari as the season goes on.

His move has forced Carlos Sainz out of the team and where he ends up is going to have a huge say in this year’s driver market.

There’s also the speculation surrounding Sergio Perez’s future and if Red Bull decide to replace him for next year then that could set off a chain reaction as well.

However, the first seat that needs to be filled is at Mercedes and Trulli thinks Fernando Alonso is the best option.

His contract at Aston Martin ends this year and although he might be coming towards the end of his career, he’s still incredibly quick.

He might also give Mercedes’s biggest hope for the future time to get up to speed before he joins the team.

Alonso has huge choice to make this season

Asked who he would hire if he was in Toto Wolff’s position, Trulli said: “If I were in Mercedes I would take him [Fernando Alonso] and he would jump into a car that finally works.”

Alonso has admitted that his future is ‘not thinking about’ at the moment with 24 races to prepare for this season.

When asked about joining Mercedes, Alonso joked that he’s the only available world champion on the market and that would also play into Trulli’s thinking too.

Mercedes also have the highly-rated Andrea Kimi Antonelli waiting in the wings and he’s being touted as Hamilton’s direct replacement.

There’s also the chance he ends up heading to Williams first and if that’s the case then a short-term contract for Alonso would make perfect sense.

However, he might end up wanting to stay at Aston Martin if they’re willing to offer him a longer deal.
