Mercedes fans have been left waiting for official confirmation that George Russell will continue with the team beyond 2025.
At the start of the season, George Russell was the highest-profile driver who knew he was out of contract at the end of the year.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has made a habit of not tying down his drivers to long-term deals.
It’s one of the reasons why Lewis Hamilton joined Ferrari, as they offered him more than a one-plus-one contract.
Russell has stepped up in Hamilton’s absence to become the lead driver at Mercedes this year.

Hamilton praised Russell after he won the Singapore Grand Prix, strengthening his position in the drivers’ championship and highlighting to the outside world that, in the right car, he could be a Formula 1 world champion.
However, despite Wolff suggesting for months that Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli would be retained for 2026, both drivers are still waiting for official confirmation.
Now, journalist and broadcaster Nelson Valkenburg has shared more details about what might be going on behind the scenes, and why Russell might be upset with Wolff’s approach to their negotiations.

George Russell sees Toto Wolff’s interest in Max Verstappen as an ‘insult’ amid Mercedes talks
Valkenburg was speaking about the situation at Mercedes on the Nailing the Apex Podcast.
He said: “Suddenly, we hear there’s a difference in opinion on the length of contract, the amount of PR days.
“Basically, Russell wants security and recognition for the job he’s done. And I think Toto is keeping his options open.

“If I read the situation correctly, it’s a bit of an insult to George Russell, and that’s where the problem lies.
“At this point, though, they kind of cannot do without each other. They need each other, so it has to be resolved because George is racing all year at an incredible level, so they need him.
“They can’t get Verstappen or Piastri, or even if they can, having Russell there gives the team stability and incredible performance, and I think they need to reward him at this point.”

George Russell’s lack of options puts Mercedes in a strong position during 2026 contract talks
The driver market hasn’t exploded into life like it did last season, when Hamilton set off a chain reaction that saw Carlos Sainz become every midfield F1 team’s most coveted option.
However, the speculation regarding Max Verstappen and whether he would join Mercedes meant the teams that needed to lock down their drivers to new deals initially hesitated.
Verstappen has confirmed he will stay at Red Bull for at least one more year, which should make a deal between Russell and Mercedes an inevitability.

Unfortunately for Russell, because the only other seats available right now are at Red Bull, Racing Bulls and Alpine, he’s not in a strong enough position to walk away from talks with Mercedes even if he wanted to.
Guenther Steiner has told Russell to threaten Mercedes with a one-year sabbatical to get his way, with Wolff running out of options for next season if an agreement can’t be reached.
However, while a one-year deal leaves the five-time race winner vulnerable to Verstappen replacing him in 2027, if he keeps his current form up, it also makes him an attractive option for any team searching for a new driver next year.
