Toto Wolff has been a key part of Mercedes’ success in Formula 1 since the Silver Arrows returned to the world championship in 2010.
The Austrian first started working in F1 in 2009 when Wolff bought shares in the Williams team and joined their board of directors. In 2012, he was named as the executive director of Williams.
Yet Wolff joined Mercedes in January 2013 after leaving Williams to become the Silver Arrows’ executive director. His business partner Rene Berger would also become a non-executive director of the team.
Mercedes only then started to achieve some success in Formula 1 after two lacklustre years, despite having Michael Schumacher driving for them.
The team needed a shakeup and Wolff provided it, effectively replacing then-team principal Ross Brawn by bringing on board Niki Lauda as an advisor and replacing Schumacher with Lewis Hamilton for 2013.

Mercedes appointed Toto Wolff as team principal in 2013
The move to oust Brawn with Wolff at the helm would prove to be vital for Mercedes’ success, as it led to the team achieving seven and eight back-to-back Drivers and Constructors titles respectively.
Wolff had acquired 30% of Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Ltd, with a further 10% held by Niki Lauda and 60% by the parent company. Having taken over coordination of all Mercedes motorsport activities as CEO, Wolff put together one of the most successful F1 teams of all time.
Mercedes set to work on their hybrid concept years in advance compared to any other team, with their engine department then led by Andy Cowell producing one of the first concepts of the 1.6l V6 turbo-hybrids which brought the Silver Arrows huge success.
Hamilton would achieve six titles with them, while Nico Rosberg won in 2016. The team were unbeatable and became the most successful in the hybrid era, winning 111 races out of 160 between 2014 and 2021.
Mercedes won their record seventh consecutive double world championship, a record previously held by Ferrari which was achieved under the leadership of Jean Todt.
Wolff’s achievements were recognised through the presentation of the John Bolster Award in 2018 at the Autosport Awards, and the FIA President’s Award from Toft in 2018.
Toto Wolff was a racing driver before getting into Formula 1

Prior to being a Formula 1 team principal, Wolff founded investment companies Marchfifteen and Marchsixteen which focused on internet and technology investments.
Wolff also raced in the Austrian Formula Ford Championship in 1992, and in 1994 he won the 24 hours of Nurburgring in his category.
After switching to GT cars, Wolff placed sixth place in the N-GT category of the FIA GT Championship and won one race. He later won races in the Italian GT Championship.
Wolff would later survive an 189 mph crash while attempting to set a record at the Nurburgring when the right rear tyre of his Porsche 911 RSR exploded and sent him careering into the steel guardrails. Fortunately, his car skidded across the track instead of breaching the barrier.
