Mercedes driver George Russell achieved the fifth win of his Formula 1 career at the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix.
George Russell led from pole position as he helped cement Mercedes’ second-place position in the constructors’ championship with what he called his most ‘dominant’ display in Formula 1 to date.
Team principal Toto Wolff teased that Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli would soon be signing new contracts for next season after the race, and it’s easy to see why after their performance across the Singapore Grand Prix weekend.
Russell set two laps good enough for pole position in qualifying, and the threat of Max Verstappen behind him was quickly thwarted despite the Red Bull driver starting on the softer compound tyres.
| RANK | DRIVER | TEAM | POINTS |
| 1 | George Russell | Mercedes | 25 |
| 2 | Max Verstappen | Red Bull | 18 |
| 3 | Lando Norris | McLaren | 15 |
| 4 | Oscar Piastri | McLaren | 12 |
| 5 | Kimi Antonelli | Mercedes | 10 |
| 6 | Charles Leclerc | Ferrari | 8 |
| 7 | Fernando Alonso | Aston Martin | 6 |
| 8 | Lewis Hamilton | Ferrari | 4 |
| 9 | Oliver Bearman | Haas | 2 |
| 10 | Carlos Sainz | Williams | 1 |
The British driver opened up a comfortable gap for his only pit stop of the race, and while he was slightly frustrated by how slow some of the backmarkers were to move over for the blue flags, it never gave Verstappen a sniff that he could catch him.
Russell was coy about a Mercedes contract extension after the race, but his future, at least for 2026, should be sorted out relatively quickly.
He couldn’t help but take inspiration from Ferrari driver and his former teammate Lewis Hamilton in his celebrations.
The seven-time world champion had another Grand Prix to forget, but sent Russell a message after the race to congratulate him on his second win of the 2025 campaign.

Lewis Hamilton congratulates George Russell on winning the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix
Russell took to social media to celebrate his victory and posted on Instagram: “Back in 2018, I was here with Mercedes watching Lewis take an insane pole and win.
“I remember seeing him take a very cool pic on the circuit after the win, and of myself dreaming of being in F1.
“Seven years later, it’s a special moment for me to win here in Singapore and to celebrate the moment with my team.”
Hamilton saw Russell’s tribute to his iconic win in 2018 and replied: “Mega drive George, proud of you and the whole team! Keep up the great work.”

George Russell admits Max Verstappen made him ‘nervous’ during the Singapore Grand Prix
Russell won the Singapore Grand Prix by 5.430 seconds to Verstappen, although it’s hard to believe he didn’t have more pace in his back pocket if required.
For context, even before Hamilton’s penalty, he finished more than 80 seconds behind his old teammate.
Charles Leclerc admitted the Singapore Grand Prix was brutal for Ferrari, as they appeared to have the fourth-fastest car on the grid.
| Position | Drivers' Championship | Points |
| 1 | Oscar Piastri | 336 |
| 2 | Lando Norris | 314 |
| 3 | Max Verstappen | 273 |
| 4 | George Russell | 237 |
| 5 | Charles Leclerc | 173 |
| 6 | Lewis Hamilton | 127 |
| 7 | Andrea Kimi Antonelli | 88 |
| 8 | Alexander Albon | 70 |
| 9 | Isack Hadjar | 39 |
| 10 | Nico Hulkenberg | 37 |
In recent seasons, there’s been an expectation that the Marina Bay Street Circuit has been a weak track for Red Bull.
But, Russell admitted he was ‘nervous’ about Verstappen as soon as he discovered he was on soft tyres at the start of the race.
With overtaking so difficult in Singapore, as Lando Norris discovered in the final laps of the race, if the four-time world champion had got the jump on Russell, he might not have been able to find a way back past.
It wasn’t something Russell had to worry about in the end, and adding another victory to his CV won’t have done his final contract negotiations with Wolff any harm.
