Despite signing a new deal midway through the 2025 term, Fred Vasseur’s future at Ferrari is still very uncertain.
Upon Mattia Binotto’s resignation towards the end of the 2022 F1 season, Fred Vasseur was given the chance to lead the Prancing Horse after a strong stint with the Sauber outfit.
Vasseur’s mission was clear: restore Ferrari to their former winning ways and bring a championship back to Maranello for the first time since 2008.
After a few seasons of Red Bull dominance, the Scuderia’s chances looked to have received a boost during their closely fought title fight with McLaren in 2024.
Even though it became clear that Ferrari wouldn’t be replicating their title hopes in 2025, Vasseur was handed a new ‘multi-year’ contract at Maranello, which served as a show of faith in the Frenchman’s leadership.

Fred Vasseur highlights the fine margins between success and failure as a team boss in sports
During an interview with L’Equipe, Vasseur was asked several questions regarding Ferrari’s downward trajectory during the 2025 F1 season, as well as how he feels about the upcoming new era of regulations in 2026.
He was also asked whether he thinks the role of a team principal in F1 can be compared to that of a football manager. The Frenchman was quick to disagree, saying, “I don’t think so. It’s much harder for them.”
Vasseur then added, “I know what I’m talking about. I’ve been a big PSG fan since I was a child. When I was managing Sauber, I was in negotiations with Qatar, who wanted to buy the team.
“So that year, I went to the Parc very often to talk to Nasser [bin Ghanim Al-Khelaifi]. A football coach can have a rapid impact on his team, but he is also dependent on a missed penalty.
“Imagine PSG’s match against Liverpool, which was decided by a millimetre in the penalty shoot-out. Luis Enrique is a hero today, but he could also have been sacked if the penalty hadn’t gone in.
“In F1, you need time. I’m still waiting for the guys I recruited when I arrived in 2023.”

Has Fred Vasseur had enough time to catapult Ferrari back to their former glory?
The current Ferrari team principal has now served as the main man on the pit wall for four full years of racing, the same amount of time that Binotto spent in the role.
The 2025 season marked Ferrari’s worst finishing position under Vasseur’s leadership, with the Scuderia managing a top-three finish in the previous three seasons.
The Frenchman’s record at the team is better than his predecessor’s, but not by much at all, raising the question of whether or not Vasseur has been given sufficient time to turn Ferrari’s fortunes around.
The 2026 season will be a crucial flash point in the career of Ferrari’s team principal. If they aren’t capable of winning some silverware for Maranello, we could potentially see a new face heading the Scuderia’s efforts in the coming years.
