Aston Martin have perhaps pulled off the biggest shock of the 2025 season, and indeed for 2026, by announcing Adrian Newey as their new team principal.
Reports emerged from the Las Vegas GP that Andy Cowell was set to be removed from his post as team principal. The 56-year-old took the role at Aston Martin in October 2024, but just over a year later, he will move on to being the chief strategy officer.
In the wake of the rumours, Christian Horner emerged as a candidate to replace Cowell as team principal, having been linked with the team since he left Red Bull. Andreas Siedl was also identified as a potential option, but Aston Martin would sign neither of them.
Is Lawrence Stroll giving Adrian Newey TOO MUCH responsibility ahead of 2026?
Instead, they promoted from within, but not the person anyone would have expected. Newey will be Aston Martin’s team principal from 2026, a role he has never taken before in his F1 career.
But despite that fact, he has more than enough experience to take the role, having won multiple championships and been hands-on with the design of F1 cars at Williams, McLaren and Red Bull. Aston Martin are already seeing the benefits of his signing, and they can get a lot more out of him.

Aston Martin must unlock Adrian Newey’s overlooked talent as a race engineer in 2026
When he joined Aston Martin in 2025, Newey was not set to influence the AMR25, as he focused his attention on the 2026 F1 regulations. With Honda joining as an engine supplier, they are tipped as one of the favourites for the title next year.
However, with the team being largely uncompetitive in 2025, Lawrence Stroll was desperate to utilise the 66-year-old’s experience. Therefore, he became more involved in the team’s operations, and the benefits of signing him from Red Bull became clear.

Fernando Alonso has been astounded by Newey and his efforts behind the scenes to help improve the team. But Aston Martin can still get more out of him, and making him team principal can unlock his hidden talent.
Peter Windsor told Aston Martin to use Newey’s experience as a race engineer to improve the team’s fortunes. He won eight drivers’ titles and six constructors’ championships with Red Bull as an engineer, designing the cars that Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen took to glory.
Aston Martin are tipped for success in 2026, but this season has exposed how much work is required. The pressure will be on Newey, but his incredible experience and knowledge are there to lead the team forward – they must find it.

What could Adrian Newey’s Aston Martin look like in the future?
By announcing Newey as team principal, Aston Martin have become one of the most intriguing teams in 2026 with the Formula 1 driver market. Alonso is out of contract next year, while Lance Stroll’s long-term future in the sport is also in doubt.
With Alonso likely to retire, the Silverstone outfit will be left exploring their options. F1 Oversteer understands Aston Martin are planning a new driver line-up in 2027, which would also see Stroll leave the team.
F1 fans think Newey will try to sign Verstappen and Charles Leclerc for 2027. The pair have been linked with the team in 2025, with the former assessing his options under the new regulations, while the latter is losing patience with Ferrari’s underperformance.
If the 2026 car is competitive, Aston Martin will be an attractive option. Add in Newey as team principal, and they may have the perfect team to win championships.
