Aston Martin may be about to make a big change behind the scenes as they prepare for the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Multiple reports indicate that there could be a change in team principal, with Andy Cowell, who has been in the role for less than 12 months, set to vacate the position.

It’s unclear why this move is set to happen at the end of the season, and Aston Martin’s focus remains on their racing, but it does feel like a bit of a surprise ahead of the 2026 F1 regulations.

Immediately, multiple names popped up linked with a potential move, and there’s a vast array of talent available at the moment.

F1 fans have told Aston Martin not to hire Christian Horner, and he has been waiting patiently for an opening ever since Red Bull let him go in the summer.

Aston Martin’s favourite to replace Cowell is Andreas Seidl, the former McLaren and Audi boss who left his last leadership role in 2024. He has a proven track record and is highly regarded.

Aston Martin must not hire Christian Horner and trigger more Adrian Newey arguments

Horner is ‘pushing hard’ for Aston Martin and wants to be back in both a leadership and shareholder capacity. There may be a substantial issue with that, though.

If Cowell is simply being ushered to another department, indicating that there may have been some disagreements with design guru Newey, then the aim will be to avoid unrest and arguments.

Bringing Horner back into the fold, a man partly responsible for Newey’s departure from Red Bull in 2024, won’t help.

Aston Martin could become the new Red Bull, especially with a lucrative new Honda deal about to start, but that doesn’t mean they have to hire all of their old staff.

Bringing Horner into the fold would only complicate matters and probably upset the man who the team hopes can bring sustained success to Silverstone.

It takes a lot of effort to maintain a strong working relationship, and it hasn’t been very long since Newey last struggled to see eye-to-eye with Horner.

Why Aston Martin are well-positioned for F1 success in 2026

Charles Leclerc has received an offer from Aston Martin, and it looks as though the team are continuing to plan for the future aggressively.

Newey has worked exclusively on their 2026 project since the start of the year. He didn’t bother wasting a second on 2025, even while their performance was disappointing.

It’s important to remember that, as a result of finishing somewhat low in the constructors’ championship over the last few seasons, they will receive enhanced wind tunnel time.

That will be vital, and with someone as creative as Newey at the helm, it could help spark a sort of Brawn-esque situation for 2026. Could something revolutionary be in the works already?
