After a controversial end to his 2025 Formula 1 season, Oscar Piastri is being linked with a move away from McLaren.

For many, that will not be surprising to hear, given how the Aussie’s season went. He was leading the championship for 15 race weekends, winning five of the opening nine races, when a poor run of form allowed teammate Lando Norris to win the title.

Many believed that McLaren favoured Norris over Piastri in the second half of the season with team orders. Individual errors and a car that was unsuited to his driving style were also factors, but papaya rules left a sour taste in the mouth of the 24-year-old’s camp.

His frustrations were clear to see, and it has prompted speculation that he could seek a way out of Woking. Team principal Andrea Stella has been warned that Piastri will leave McLaren if he is not treated better.

The 2025 season proved that the Australian is a future world champion, and several teams up and down the paddock realise that. Many have already expressed an interest in signing Piastri for 2027.

But with the changing regulations and uncertainty around the pecking order, there are several factors for Piastri to consider if he is set on leaving McLaren. It begs the question: what is his best option for 2027?

The best option – Aston Martin

Any decision that Piastri makes come 2027 will be a risky one, but of all his options, if he leaves McLaren, Aston Martin stands out as his best.

Piastri has been linked with Aston Martin as the Silverstone outfit prepares to bring in a new driver pairing next year. Fernando Alonso could retire, while the uncertainty surrounding Lance Stroll’s future could open the door for the McLaren star.

With Adrian Newey and Honda spearheading the project, they have what they need to be a winning team. Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc are also targets for Aston Martin, but if a seat is open, a switch from papaya to green would be Piastri’s best bet to win a title.

The next alternative – Red Bull

Similar to Aston Martin, Red Bull are in a transition period coming into 2026. Gone are the days of Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, with Laurent Mekies’ regime bringing back solidity and newfound hope.

A move to Red Bull would likely depend on Verstappen’s future, but if a door were open in Milton Keynes, it would be an exciting project. The team’s collaboration with Ford on their in-house power unit and Mekies’ new technical approach could see them return to the front.

Piastri is keen on a move to Red Bull and the team have long been admirers. The problem would be if the Aussie would adapt to their car, which is something nobody besides Verstappen has been able to do.

The team to be cautious with – Ferrari

Piastri has been heavily linked with Ferrari, including a swap with Leclerc, who is losing patience in Maranello. The Monegasque driver and teammate Lewis Hamilton could be out of the team come 2027.

Of course, driving for Ferrari is an honour that every driver has dreamed of. But today, the team are in turmoil after a frustrating 2025 campaign, and there are doubts as to whether their 2026 machine will be competitive.

Ferrari chairman John Elkann promised the title by 2026, and if that is not delivered, it should be even more reason for Piastri to treat this potential move with caution. Their operational errors and lack of success make staying at McLaren a better option at this stage.

The last resort – Audi

Audi have emerged as a surprise destination for Piastri, with the German manufacturer planning big things upon their arrival in F1 in 2026.

However, Audi’s project will still be raw come 2027, and by their own admission, probably not in a position to win races.

Audi plan to win the title by 2030, and while that would make them one of the fastest champions, Piastri will not want to wait that long, especially when he is already at a title-winning team. It is an exciting project, but not one he should consider among the other three and his current team.
