Formula 1 drivers race at the risk of a ban for getting too many penalty points on their super licence, but how many does each pilot have and who is closest to a suspension?

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen is gunning for his fourth consecutive world championship in 2024. Only four drivers in the history of Formula 1 have ever achieved a four-peat before.

Lando Norris and McLaren are leading the challenge, with the battle for the constructors’ title looking particularly intriguing. The poor form of Sergio Perez has opened the door for Zak Brown’s Woking squad to challenge his team from Milton Keynes.

Why do F1 drivers receive penalty points on their licence?

It’s been 10 years since Formula 1 first introduced the penalty points system.

Under it, if a driver accumulates 12 penalty points in any rolling 12-month period, they will automatically receive a one-race ban.

Drivers can receive points for all manner of offences and the most common is for causing a collision.

But they can also be punished in this manner for ignoring the stewards’ instructions, unsafe releases, track limits violations and failing to respect the rules of wheel-to-wheel combat.
