Aston Martin have just announced that Adrian Newey will take over as team principal from Andy Cowell for the 2026 Formula 1 season.

It’s been a difficult season for Aston Martin, with the team currently sitting eighth in the constructors’ championship.

Lance Stroll hasn’t scored a point since the Dutch Grand Prix, and his teammate Fernando Alonso faces a battle to finish in the top 10 of the driver standings.

Who will win the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix

This led to speculation that Andy Cowell might be moved on as Aston Martin’s CEO and team principal.

Cowell took over as team principal in January from Mike Krack, and a handful of names have been linked with his position.

Christian Horner has set out his demands to join Aston Martin, but he’s been overlooked as the team appoint his former technical chief from his time at Red Bull as their new team principal.

It’s the first time that Adrian Newey has taken on the role, and adds to his list of responsibilities within the team he already part-owns.

Aston Martin moving Andy Cowell to their engine department is a genius move

The Race have provided more information on what Aston Martin are doing at the top of the company ahead of next season’s regulation changes.

Cowell is ‘set to be moved to a new role within the Aston Martin organisation that will be more focused on its power unit progress’, with the team confirming that he and Newey would be splitting their duties in 2026.

Aston Martin’s press release stated that Cowell will be ‘using his unique experience to help optimise the technical partnership between the Team, Honda, Aramco and Valvoline.’

How Adrian Newey became Formula 1’s most successful designer

This could be the final missing piece at Aston Martin, with Adrian Newey heading up their design department alongside running the team’s trackside operations.

Speaking about Cowell’s contribution while working for Mercedes, team principal Toto Wolff said, via Sky Sports: “Andy’s leadership of the team at HPP has been a key factor in our championship success in recent seasons.

“He has made an outstanding contribution to our motorsport legacy, and I have valued and enjoyed our working relationship since 2013; I am sure he will enjoy great success in the next challenge he decides to take on.”

Aston Martin avoid repeating Christian Horner issue with Adrian Newey

Nearly every F1 team tried to hire Cowell before he was snapped up by Aston Martin, highlighting just how effective he is when tasked with working on a power unit division.

If he can strike up a strong relationship with Honda, who have been instrumental in Red Bull’s success in recent years, then there’s nothing stopping Aston Martin being a competitive outfit next year.

It’s been reported that Newey and Cowell fell out over several issues, including the departure of Eric Blandin.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have their say on Adrian Newey

“I mean, Adrian Newey doesn’t generally build bad cars. He’s built amazing cars over the years.

“My first championship car was an evolution of his car.

“He’s one of the only ones that draw by hand, the design of cars. So, his understanding there has defeinitely been an advantage.”

Lewis Hamilton talking about Adrian Newey in 2022

“You can always rely on his experience, and just as a person, he’s a great guy to chat to and relate to. Because he’s very bright, very smart, but he would also talk to the driver and then he would interpret that into the car, and try to imagine himself driving.

“I cannot deny that I would’ve preferred him to stay, just for how he is as a person, his knowledge and of course what he will bring to potentially another team if he wants to join.”

If Aston Martin want to avoid a repeat of that, then bringing in Horner would have been a bad idea.

Although Horner and Newey would have worked together again, Stroll has avoided any potential conflict that could derail his organisation.

Cowell’s step down from team principal might not be viewed as a positive at first glance, but a move into an engine-side role might be just what Aston Martin need.
