The future of Max Verstappen has become a hot topic ahead of the planned Formula 1 regulation change in 2026.

Although he is settled into his life at Red Bull having dominated the last two seasons, picked up three championships and looks set to add a fourth to his tally, now Max Verstappen is thinking about his next move.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has made no secret about wanting the Dutchman to race for him in future, having missed out on employing him to Red Bull in his junior years before F1.

Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari has left a gap in a top seat and while they look set to fill it up with 17-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the consensus is that Wolff would be more than happy to wait out a potential partnership with Verstappen.

Former F1 driver Robert Doornbos believes two F1 teams including Mercedes are in the hunt for his signature. One of those is Aston Martin, whose billionaire owner Lawrence Stroll could lure Verstappen with his plans to turn it into a championship-winning team.

Discussing the potential move on his YouTube channel, former F1 mechanic Marc Prestley shared why he thinks it would be an exciting move for Verstappen.

Why a move to Aston Martin is exciting for Max Verstappen

Aston Martin is currently building up a lot of its facilities in anticipation of a title assault from 2026, when F1’s new car and engine regulations will come into effect.

As part of that, there has been a massive recruitment drive including hires from Mercedes and Ferrari, while their Silverstone factory is said to be one of the most impressive in F1.

Priestley believes this will all be a factor when it comes to Verstappen considering his options for the future in his career.

“Yes the driver pairing of Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen is a wonderful partnership and if they got an Adrian Newey, the design team is also looking great,” said Prestley.

“They have a wonderful facility and the latest wind tunnels. All things are exciting for an engineer like Adrian and a driver like Max – someone who wants to be surrounded by the best as he moves forward in his career.”

The winning combination at Aston Martin for Max Verstappen

Along with the prospect of Verstappen partnering Fernando Alonso if he joined Aston Martin, it would also see him reunited with Adrian Newey.

It is expected that Newey will join Aston Martin with an announcement set for September after a potential move to Ferrari fell through.

From 2026 Aston Martin will also switch from Mercedes to Honda power units, whose engines have powered Verstappen to all three of his World Championships in F1 so far.

Verstappen is currently contracted with Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season, but certain performance clauses could enable him to break off that agreement early should they fail to deliver him a car capable of winning titles.
