Adrian Newey has reportedly chosen his next Formula 1 team following the news that he will leave Red Bull.
A chance to sign the most successful car designers in F1 sent the paddock into a frenzy in May after Red Bull confirmed that 65-year-old Adrian Newey is set to leave the team in February 2025.
It was expected that Ferrari would land Newey’s services given chairman John Elkann’s desire to create a powerhouse that can bring championships back to the Scuderia, having recently signed seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
According to Italian news outlet Autosprint Corriere dello Sport, it is reported that Newey will not end up at Ferrari after all and is instead going to be heading to another rival team.
Adrian Newey decides on Aston Martin after Red Bull exit
According to the report, Newey has decided to join Aston Martin with an agreement set to be announced “in early September” which is said to be worth £80 million for the next four years.
Billionaire team owner Lawrence Stroll is said to have accepted the requests made by Newey during contract negotiations after Ferrari was unwilling to fulfil one obligation, which would have enabled the legendary designer to have a say in the decision-making powers of the team.
According to Autosprint, Newey wanted to influence the hiring of new engineers, the attribution of roles, and the acceptance of technical partnerships. Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur did not agree as it could lead to unwanted political scenarios.
Stroll later met with Newey for an ‘important’ dinner in July, following a tour of their Silverstone factory. Staff were reportedly sent home to try and keep the tour secret.

Adrian Newey deal could turn Aston Martin into World Champions
Aston Martin is currently in the process of building one of the most impressive facilities in F1 at Silverstone, as Stroll attempts to turn them into a championship-winning entity. Now it appears they have poached one of the best car designers on the grid.
Newey’s track record speaks for itself, having won 12 Constructors’ Championships and 13 Drivers’ Championships.
Both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have both been confirmed until at least the end of the 2026 season, but there has been frustrations with their progress as of late from both drivers.

Alonso made his thoughts vocal on how they have sunk back into the midfield, having been one of the main challengers to Red Bull last year. Pressure has grown on technical director Dan Fallows, although the addition of Newey should help them turn things around.
Much of Newey’s influence is likely to be on their 2026 car when they will switch to Honda engines. Aston Martin also recently signed ex-Mercedes engine boss Andy Cowell, who was responsible for leading the team that created one of the most successful power units of this hybrid era in F1.
