What Ferrari must do with Oliver Bearman now as Singapore GP display proves he’s ready for ‘top drive’

Oliver Bearman is quietly having a very impressive rookie Formula 1 season and has been a consistent performer for Haas.

The Briton scored more points at the Singapore Grand Prix and hasn’t finished a race lower than 12 in his last nine attempts. The Ferrari academy driver is putting a good foot forward at a time when the Italian outfit might be taking a look at its plans for the future.

Bearman staying with Haas heading into the 2026 F1 regulations is a great thing for his development. He retains a stable environment, with full support from team boss Ayao Komatsu, without too much pressure on his performance.

Bearman will be ‘fighting for wins’ in 2027, according to Sam Bird, who believes that he has been a standout performer. However, Bearman thinks he lacks consistency and still isn’t completely satisfied with what he has delivered yet. He thinks there is more to come.

Ferrari must sign Oliver Bearman for 2027 as Singapore performance proves he is ‘top drive’ ready

Bearman misses Ferrari’s resources since making a move to the smaller Haas team. It has put into perspective just how much investment is required to help any team compete at the front of the Formula 1 field.

His team are ninth in the constructors’ championship with six rounds to go, but only trail sixth by a total of 26 points. If they can pinch a few good results, they could gain a lot of positions and prize money.

The head-to-head with experienced teammate Esteban Ocon reflects well on his ability. It’s 9-9 in both qualifying and Grands Prix, showing that he has been able to at least match the Frenchman, who was once considered for a Mercedes drive.

BBC Sport reports that a ‘top drive’ is only on the cards if he manages to beat Ocon, proving that he can be the leader of a team.

If he continues to pick up points, as he did in Singapore, then Ferrari will need to be wary of rival teams looking to poach their asset for 2027. Teams like Red Bull, who are on the lookout for a second driver, could show some interest.

How Oliver Bearman can become just the fourth driver in Haas history to achieve one feat

The next race is one which will mean a lot to Haas. Formula 1 returns to North America for the United States Grand Prix in Texas.

The team have scored points at the race on just three separate occasions during their 10 seasons in the sport, and it’s a place they don’t usually go well at.

Romain Grosjean, Kevin Magnussen, and Nico Hulkenberg have all reached the points, but never finished higher than eighth between them.

Scoring points would make Bearman the fourth driver to do so on their home soil, while finishing higher than seventh would make him the record-holder for their best finish at COTA.
