Oliver Bearman was announced as a Haas driver mid-way through the 2024 F1 season after impressing in his debut with Ferrari earlier that year.

The 20-year-old joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2021, working his way up the single-seater ladder to Formula 1 with the backing of the most iconic team in the sport.

He has impressed in the short amount of time he has spent on the F1 grid. So much so that many believe Bearman would have done a better job than Hamilton at the team this season. The seven-time world champion has struggled to adapt to Italian machinery.

Ferrari opted to send Bearman to Haas before potentially bringing him into the fold at the Scuderia for a full-time drive in the future. Team principal Fred Vasseur noted that he didn’t want the young driver to have to deal with the pressures at Ferrari during his maiden season in the sport.

Oliver Bearman misses the ‘resources’ Ferrari have to offer their drivers for development

Speaking in an interview with Formula Passion, Bearman was asked to compare his time at Ferrari to what he is currently experiencing at one of the Prancing Horse’s engine customers, Haas. The Brit said, “On the one hand, a top team has many more resources; there’s no denying that.

“There are more opportunities and more staff. For example, at Ferrari, there was a driver coach to help me with driving and with the gearshifts in the car, something we don’t have at Haas.

“We’re a small organisation, we don’t have that. I miss it and am basically coaching myself, but that’s the reality of working in a smaller team.

“On the other hand, we have much less pressure, even though I put a lot of it on myself and set the bar very high.”

Carlos Sainz shared the same sentiment following his departure from Ferrari at the end of last season. Ahead of his move to Williams, Sainz asked James Vowles for a number of luxuries, such as a driver coach, in hopes of assembling a dream team at the British racing outfit.

The 2025 F1 teammate head-to-head battle of Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon

Bearman has made some mistakes throughout the season, but they don’t paint the full picture of what he has achieved. In the trusty teammate head-to-head, he has held his own against the vastly more experienced Esteban Ocon.

The Frenchman does have a slight edge over Bearman in results, but the youngster has shown his potential in Saturday afternoon’s qualifying sessions. Both Haas drivers have the same number of Q3 appearances, with Bearman boasting more Q2 appearances, whilst Ocon has more Q1 exits.

Ocon has been surprised by Bearman this season, previously revealing that he has had the best relationship with him in comparison to all of his other teammates over the years in F1.

They had a coming-together at Silverstone earlier in the year, but the animosity was immediately squashed by the Haas leadership after the race.
