Toto Wolff ‘half enjoyed’ George Russell vs Kimi Antonelli as he almost had ‘enough’ of Canadian GP battle
Russell suffered a battery failure and was forced to stop his W17 on track. It put an end to what was a great battle in Montreal, but Mercedes boss Wolff admits that he almost intervened before Russell’s car broke down.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the race, the Austrian said he ‘half enjoyed’ his drivers fighting on track. He and Mercedes almost had ‘enough’ of the battle as they almost came to blows again on Sunday.
Wolff said: “As a team we have had so many situations where it is bittersweet. You are extremely happy for one driver but gutted for the other one.
Kimi Antonelli wins his FOURTH race in a row at the Canadian Grand Prix! How good do his title chances look now?
“Kimi has done a splendid job today and deserved to win. It was a shame for George as he was leading.
“We half enjoyed watching how they fought it out. Every time we thought about saying, ‘we have had enough for the moment’, the next two laps were fast again.
“As long as we maintained that gap, it was okay watching it, but it can obviously go wrong. If it was closer behind us, we would jump in.”
