The Formula 1 driver’s market has been more active in 2024 than for some time and the action doesn’t appear to be over despite the season being nearly two-thirds complete.
Williams have had to put up with Logan Sargeant’s underachievement throughout the campaign and the Dutch Grand Prix might have been the final straw for team principal James Vowles.
His massive crash during the final practice session at Zandvoort saw Sargeant miss out on taking part in qualifying and caused even more expensive crash damage.
With millions of pounds worth of prize money at stake dependent on where a team finishes in the Constructors’ Championship, Vowles looks like he may need to make a change ahead of Carlos Sainz joining the team in 2025.
Speaking on the Pit Talk Podcast, journalist Mat Coch shared the latest information he’s heard about who could be Alex Albon’s teammate potentially as soon as the Italian Grand Prix.
That’s where German driver Mick Schumacher comes into the equation.

Schumacher is part of the Mercedes set-up this year as well as driving for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship.
He may suddenly be thrust onto the Formula 1 grid for the first time since the season finale in 2022 when he lost his Haas seat to Nico Hulkenberg.

Talking about the ever-changing situation at Williams, Coch said: “Mick Schumacher is in the mix there, in fact, my intel, as we’re recording this…I mean the problem with this story is that it’s changing so quickly because the deadlines are seemingly so near.
“I mean, we’re talking Thursday for when a decision has to be made by, so that’ll probably shake out in the next 24 hours.
“But Mick Schumacher now looks like the favourite for that drive. From my understanding and the many phone calls I’ve had over the last 24 hours or so, Liam Lawson is open to being loaned out.
“Red Bull is keen for that to happen, but they also want the right to be able to call him back if they do and James Vowles at Williams isn’t keen on that.
“The probable outcome is that it will be Mick Schumacher in that car if there is a change because time is running out.”

Red Bull logistics could boost Mick Schumacher’s chances of returning to F1
The two standout candidates to replace Sargeant are Schumacher and Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson.
Helmut Marko seemed happy to let Lawson go out on loan after the Dutch Grand Prix but it might not be as straightforward as that.
Red Bull could be forced into changing Sergio Perez or Daniel Ricciardo before the end of the current campaign and if that were to happen then Lawson would once again be required.
It means Lawson appears well likely to be signed by Williams with Vowles not keen on bringing in a driver he could then need to replace again before the end of the campaign.
Williams need to make a quick decision and that may be the only thing going for Sargeant at this stage.
However, if Vowles decides that enough is enough from the American then Schumacher may be handed a place on the grid that could help him earn the second seat at Sauber for 2025.
