Sergio Perez sees one ‘good’ aspect of F1 fans booing Lando Norris after he won in Mexico and Brazil

Lando Norris of McLaren regained the lead of the 2025 F1 drivers’ championship after winning in Mexico City and he won again in Brazil but was subjected to boos from fans.

Boos could be heard in the stadium section at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, as some fans jeered Norris while he was interviewed straight after his dominant victory in the Mexico City Grand Prix. Some fans also booed Norris throughout the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend.

It has been suggested that the fans booing Norris were asserting their ongoing frustration at how he gained from McLaren using team orders on Oscar Piastri at Monza. Piastri led Norris by 34 points atop the F1 drivers’ standings before the Italian Grand Prix, but is now 24 adrift.

McLaren told Piastri to give Norris back P2 in the Italian GP as the former undercut the latter after pitting first to cover off a distant threat from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The Woking crew had assured Norris that Piastri would not come out in front if he let his teammate stop first.

Piastri has crumbled in the title fight since McLaren’s team orders at Monza, having failed to outscore Norris in any of the following six events. He also lost the lead in the standings after Norris won the Mexico City GP and was subjected to boos, with Piastri 42.065s behind in P5.

Fans booed Norris after he won the F1 Sprint in Brazil, and again after he won the Sao Paulo GP last weekend, as well. But while Mexican hero Sergio Perez does not believe fans booing Norris was “nice”, he has liked seeing some F1 fans show their true feelings about the sport.

Perez told Reuters: “I don’t think that’s nice, obviously, to be booing the guy that won a race. But at the same time, it’s also good to see the feelings of the fans, in terms of how passionate they are.

“But I think it’s got to be done with respect. We have to have respect for the guy that won the race, always. But, yeah, it’s how it is.”

Norris was not only subjected to boos from fans in Brazil when he won the F1 Sprint and the Sao Paulo GP last weekend. Some F1 fans booed images of Norris shown on the big screens in Brazil when the McLaren star was shown prior to the race during the driver presentations.

The Briton, who turned 26 years old this Thursday, has sought to play down how the jeers in Mexico and Brazil have impacted him. But Norris is privately getting fed up with being booed by F1 fans showing their anger towards McLaren for an incident that he did not orchestrate.

It is reasonable for F1 fans to feel somewhat aggrieved by McLaren telling Piastri to yield P2 in the Italian GP back to Norris, as the latter had been disadvantaged by having a slower pit stop when he stopped second to help the former stay in front of Ferrari racer Leclerc for P3.

But McLaren had assured Norris that Piastri would not undercut him, without any provisions for a possible slow pit stop, if he let the Australian stop first. So, McLaren made an awkward situation for themselves and then felt they had to honour their words to the Briton at Monza.
