Ruth Buscombe surprised by what she heard from Lando Norris’ engineer after Dutch Grand Prix failure

Lando Norris retired from the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday with a mechanical failure that could be decisive in the 2025 F1 title race. It was one of the most dramatic moments of the season so far.

There were only eight laps to go when Norris reported an issue on the radio, and his McLaren car soon ground to a halt. He was chasing his championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri at that stage.

Piastri’s win means the gap between the two drivers swells to 34 points. For the first time all year, he effectively has a race win in his ‘pocket’.

Norris still has some hope, but based on the extremely close gap between the McLaren drivers up to this point, he may need a DNF on the other side of the garage to truly revive his ambitions. The prospect of a first F1 title now appears far more distant.

Ruth Buscombe says Will Joseph lost his composure after Lando Norris retired from Dutch Grand Prix

Speaking on F1TV’s post-race show, former engineer Ruth Buscombe drew a comparison between Norris’ DNF and Lewis Hamilton’s retirement at the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix.

That came in the midst of another intra-team title battle, this time between Hamilton and Mercedes partner Nico Rosberg. The difference is that the former was leading when his engine failed.

He left Sepang 23 points adrift, and he wasn’t able to reel in the deficit in the five races that remained. The margin for Norris is larger, but there are still nine Grands Prix and three Sprints to go.

Buscombe was struck that Norris almost had to ‘console’ his McLaren engineer. Will Joseph apologised and repeatedly told his driver he’d been ‘really fast’ during the race.

Norris replied that it ‘doesn’t matter’ and added, ‘Unlucky boys’.

“It’s heartbreaking, isn’t it?” Buscombe remarked. “You can tell when your race engineer… we’re supposed to be the boring, cool ones. When you hear the heartbreak in Will Joseph’s voice as well, it’s almost Lando consoling him.

“It was really reminiscent to me of the Malaysia DNF in 2016 of Lewis Hamilton. It’s still a reliability game. We have these four power units [allocated for the season], and it all comes down to these micro, micro details.

“You hope that’s not the defining element of the championship, don’t you?”

Andrea Stella tells Lando Norris fans exactly what they want to hear

Piastri called Norris ‘incredibly unfortunate’ in his post-race interview. It was another display of the team ethos at Woking.

According to Andrea Stella, Norris immediately told his team to look forward after the race. He’s already focused on recouping the lost points.

Norris can’t afford to keep trading victories with Piastri. He’s only once managed back-to-back wins in 2025, but he now needs a streak.

While it sounds ‘crazy’, Ralf Schumacher says the retirement may help Norris in the final third of the season. In his eyes, all the pressure is on Piastri to convert a sizeable lead.
