The Dutch Grand Prix turned out to be one of the most dramatic races of the 2025 Formula 1 season so far.

It all started when Lewis Hamilton crashed out at turn three all by himself, extending his wait for a Ferrari podium to 15 Grand Prix and counting.

Things went from bad to worse for Ferrari, as Charles Leclerc was taken out by Andrea Kimi Antonelli, leaving Fred Vasseur’s team pointless heading to their home race at the Italian Grand Prix.

There was one more twist in the tail at the front of the grid, as Lando Norris crawled to a halt just a few laps before the end of the race, as McLaren suffered a mechanical fault.

Oscar Piastri would have been worried that his car was in danger of failing as well, but he led Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar home to take another victory.

Speaking after the race, he commented on Norris’ failure and how he prepared for a return to Zandvoort after missing out on a podium last season.

Oscar Piastri says Lando Norris was ‘incredibly unfortunate’ after the Dutch Grand Prix

Piastri was being interviewed by Giedo van der Garde, via Sky Sports F1 (31/8 3:50 pm), and asked about the race, he said : “Yeah, it feels good obviously.

“I feel like it’s a pretty hard act to follow Isack standing up here, so I’ll try my best.

“But, yeah, I controlled the race when I needed to and, obviously, it was incredibly unfortunate for Lando at the end.

“Still, I felt like I was in control of that one and just used the pace when I needed to.

“It was a bit of a different race to 12 months ago, so I’m very happy with all the work we’ve done to try and improve around here, and very satisfied to come out on top.”

Piastri was then asked what he changed from 12 months ago when he struggled far more, and replied: “Nothing special, just trying to improve everywhere we can.

“At the start of this weekend, it was looking like a difficult one, but I managed to get it together in qualifying, and then I was happy with the pace I had today.

“Very, very happy. Obviously, a couple of safety cars spiced it up a little bit, but we weathered it all. I’m very proud of the whole team. It wasn’t just myself that improved to get here; it was the whole team around me. Without them, none of this is possible. It’s a big, big team effort.

It was put to Piastri that it was the perfect start after the summer break, and he simply said: “Yep, starting out on top’s a good way to go yet. If we can keep it running, then that’d be great, but there’s a long way to go yet, and we’ll keep doing it one race at a time.”

Oscar Piastri’s mother reacts to her son’s Dutch Grand Prix victory

Piastri has now extended his lead over Norris to 34 points in the drivers’ championship.

It’s the largest lead either driver has had this season, and with only nine Grand Prix weekends remaining, it puts Norris on the back foot.

Piastri might not be the most expressive driver, but his mother, Nicole Piastri, has regularly gone viral for her interactions and reactions to her son’s career.

After the race, she posted on X and said: “Just another chilled race for us here.”

Her heart would have been in her mouth when Norris’ car broke down, but Piastri has now put himself in the strongest position thus far to become Australia’s next Formula 1 world champion.

The ‘trick’ McLaren have developed to move ahead of their rivals once again worked at Zandvoort, and now it’s up to Piastri to deliver between now and Abu Dhabi.
