Red Bull staff think they know exactly who’s spreading the Max Verstappen to Mercedes rumours

Max Verstappen’s response to the latest wave of Mercedes links at the British Grand Prix was predictably guarded. The Dutchman said he had nothing new to say on the subject.

Red Bull won’t quite know how to feel. On one level, Verstappen hasn’t made any incendiary remarks that suggest he could be on his way out.

But equally, he’s turned down multiple opportunities to expressly confirm he’ll be racing for the team next year. It’s clear, on that basis, that he’s weighing up his options.

With major regulation changes taking effect this winter, it might not be the right time to move. Verstappen could even be negotiating over 2027, rather than next year.

Jos Verstappen may be responsible for Max Verstappen to Mercedes stories

According to ESPN, Christian Horner is ‘relaxed’ about the latest speculation. Verstappen has a contract until the end of 2028.

There is at least one exit clause within that deal, but its significance may be overplayed. Even if it does come into play, which isn’t guaranteed, the four-time world champion may choose not to use it.

What’s more, ‘many within the team’ think that Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, is feeding the media stories about a potential Mercedes move. It’s reassuring for Horner and co. if the rumours aren’t coming from the driver himself.

Recent reports have suggested that Verstappen Sr has little confidence in Horner’s leadership. The two publicly clashed last year.

Max Verstappen may have a masterplan that Toto Wolff will not be happy about

There are also suggestions that Verstappen wants Red Bull to be restructured. This would see Horner replaced or stripped of some of his responsibilities.

Again, it’s not clear who has leaked that information. But the team’s regression is doubtless concerning – even a driver of Verstappen’s calibre is more than 60 points off the pace, and the team have failed to solve their problems with several upgrades.

Verstappen could be using the Mercedes interest as leverage to inspire some big changes at Red Bull. He knows how much influence he exerts at Milton Keynes.

His inherent preference would likely be to stay put, honouring the team who gave him a chance at the age of 17 and have built their entire project around him. But they must satisfy his appetite for winning if the partnership is to continue long-term.
