Mick Schumacher is actively ‘looking’ for a way back to Formula 1 and Red Bull could now pave the way for his return with their interest in a replacement for Sergio Perez.

The 25-year-old is spending a second season on the sidelines this year after losing his seat at Haas after the 2022 term. Schumacher made his Grand Prix debut for the American squad in 2021. But he only got two seasons in the pinnacle of motorsport and is now keen to return.

Schumacher entered 44 Grand Prix for Haas but only scored 12 points with a P8 finish at the 2022 British GP and P6 in the following Austrian GP. His results were, ultimately, not enough to stay on F1’s grid. So, the German has since occupied a reserve driver role with Mercedes.

Mick Schumacher is ‘looking’ to return to F1 with Williams

Alpine returning to the top tier in the World Endurance Championship in 2024 has also seen Schumacher switch disciplines to race in the Hypercar category. But his dream is still to race in Formula 1 again. Now, RTL reporter Felix Gorner claims his chances might not be that bad.

Gorner has told sport.de that Schumacher’s hopes for returning to F1 ‘are not bad’ once the dominos start to fall in the driver market. The 2020 Formula 2 champion is even particularly ‘looking’ into the possibilities of Williams changing their driver line-up for a seat on the grid.

Williams team principal James Vowles continues to support Logan Sargeant but the 23-year-old is out of contract after 2024. The American is ‘firmly’ in contention to keep the seat with Vowles’ backing ‘at the moment’. But Schumacher is keeping tabs on the picture at Williams.

Sargeant has faced a tough start to his second season in F1 after only just retaining a seat at Williams. The Grove team only retained the Fort Lauderdale native past his rookie term after the season finale Abu Dhabi GP. He has only scored one point across his 26 entries to date.

Yet what improves Schumacher’s chances of returning to F1 with Williams is that Alex Albon could potentially leave. The 28-year-old is under contract in Grove through the 2025 season. But Red Bull’s Thai majority owner Chalerm Yoovidhya would like to see Albon replace Perez.

Perez is among the plethora of Formula 1 drivers out of contract after 2024 and Yoovidhya is keen to see his London-born Thai compatriot Albon leave Williams to take up the Mexican’s seat. So, Schumacher could soon have two openings to return to F1 with Williams next year.

Albon scored his two Grand Prix podiums to date whilst driving for Red Bull during the 2020 season. He reached the rostrum at the Tuscan GP and the Bahrain GP but failed to show Red Bull enough after replacing Pierre Gasly midway through the 2019 season to stay in their car.

Red Bull swapped Albon out for Perez after the 2020 season. But his rise with Williams could now offer Albon a way back to Milton Keynes, with Red Bull also paving a way back to F1 for Schumacher at Williams. Albon dominated Sargeant in 2023 with 27 of Williams’s 28 points.
