Alex Albon is one of the top midfield stars on the Formula 1 grid, so here is everything that you need to know about the racing superstar currently with the Williams F1 team.

The Grove team handed Albon his route back into the pinnacle of motorsport in 2022 after a year on the sidelines. Red Bull had cast Albon aside after just one-and-a-half seasons as the teammate of Max Verstappen. But his star has never shone brighter than it is with Williams.

Albon rebuilt his reputation after joining the team founded by Frank Williams in 1977. Red Bull had quickly promoted him to their factory team after half a season as a rookie at Toro Rosso. But he struggled to adjust to the car and only scored 105 points in 2020 to Verstappen’s 214.

Alex Albon rebuilt his reputation driving for Williams in F1

Red Bull quickly decided to oust Pierre Gasly for Albon after just 12 Grand Prix at Toro Rosso having shown immediate promise with their junior team. Albon made his debut at the 2019 Australian GP, scored his first points in P9 at the Bahrain GP and took P6 at the German GP.

Albon even showed sublime race craft on his debut for Red Bull at the 2019 Belgian GP as he came through from P17 on the grid after an engine penalty to finish in fifth. He nearly made the 2019 Brazilian GP podium, too, but for a late collision with Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes.

A maiden rostrum finally arrived at the 2020 Tuscan GP as Albon took P3 on the podium for Red Bull at Mugello. He also returned to the rostrum at the Bahrain GP with another third-place finish. But Red Bull axed him for Sergio Perez and sent Albon to drive in DTM in 2021.

His switch to the German touring car championship started brilliantly with a podium on his debut at Monza. Albon also won for his first – and only – time in DTM in the second race at the Nurburgring. It was his first race win of any kind since the 2018 F2 Feature race in Sochi.

Albon spent two seasons in Formula 2 before earning his graduation to Formula 1 with Toro Rosso. He further took third place in the 2018 F2 championship behind George Russell, now of Mercedes, and Lando Norris, now of McLaren. Albon took seven fewer points than Norris.

Alex Albon never won a junior title racing in single-seaters

A bronze medal from the 2018 F2 season sits beside Albon’s silver spoon from the 2016 GP3 Series championship. He also finished the 2014 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season in third for his best results in any championship. Albon never won a junior title racing single-seaters.

Karting yielded lavish success for Albon, however, as he lapped up title after title from 2006 to 2011. His first titles even came in 2006 with Comer Cadet honours in Kartmasters British Grand Prix and also Honda Cadet honours in that season’s Super 1 National Championship.

Albon continued to thrive racing go-karts with KF3 titles across the 2008 Kartmasters British Grand Prix, 2009 Formula Kart Stars, Super 1 National Championship and KF Winter Series, plus the CIK-FIA European Championship and also the CIK-FIA World Cup both during 2010.

Dominating the karting scene – only narrowly missing out on the 2011 CIK-FIA World Karting Championship to Nyck de Vries – also saw Red Bull sign Albon for their driver development programme. But a point-less first season in Formula Renault 2.0 in 2012 cost him his place.

But Albon kept plugging away as he climbed the motorsport ladder and only just missed out on the 2016 GP3 title to Charles Leclerc. While Albon’s 2018 F2 campaign also secured him a drive at Nissan’s Formula E team before switching to F1 for Toro Rosso without ever racing.
