Red Bull Racing junior driver Arvid Lindblad is increasing his preparations for Formula 1 as he makes his case to take the final step up onto the grid.

Arvid Lindblad may only be 17 years old, but already there are very high hopes for him at Red Bull.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner is excited about Lindblad, and he already possesses an FIA superlicence.

He won the Formula Regional Oceania Championship over the winter break to earn enough points to apply for special dispensation to be awarded a superlicence before his 18th birthday.

Lindblad is taking part in his maiden Formula 2 season this year and sits third in the championship behind McLaren junior Alex Dunne and Richard Verschoor.

Dunne is taking part in his maiden FP1 session at the Austrian Grand Prix, and it won’t be long until Lindblad follows in his footsteps.

In preparation for his public F1 debut, Lindblad took part in a private session alongside fellow Red Bull junior Ayumu Iwasa at Imola on Monday.

The 17-year-old is already doing plenty to impress senior Red Bull staff, and his latest F1 test hasn’t done his prospects of reaching the pinnacle of motorsport any harm.

Arvid Lindblad praised for ‘perfect’ attitude after latest Formula 1 test day at Imola

A report from Motorsport has suggested that during Lindblad’s first F1 test in February before the season started, the British teenager had two spins during his stint in the car.

However, Red Bull have been impressed with his ‘perfect attitude’ during the test day and given his relative inexperience, his performance is only going to improve.

A further story from Motorsport after Monday’s test provided more details about his 300km run in AlphaTauri’s 2023 Formula 1 car.

Lindblad looks set to take part in two free practice sessions for Racing Bulls this season, but it’s not known which races he’ll jump into the VCARB 02 for the first time.

The 17-year-old was tasked with working on two things during his run at Imola: his consistency and one-lap pace.

This season has demonstrated how important qualifying is, and so if Lindblad is going to be promoted into Formula 1 in the near future, it’s something he needs to be on top of immediately.

Lindblad did two stints on the medium tyres as he hoped to improve his consistency, as well as four flying laps, with tyre preparation one of the key aspects he worked on.

After three test starts, Lindblad handed the car over to Iwasa, but Red Bull were said to be ‘very satisfied’ with his performance, despite one ‘small mistake’ during a qualifying lap.

Arvid Lindblad being lined up as Red Bull Racing’s next Formula 1 driver

Lindblad is one of three Red Bull-backed drivers taking part in Formula 2 this season.

Oliver Goethe only has one points-scoring finish so far in 2025, while Pepe Marti has been unable to build on his blistering start to the campaign and sits 30 points behind Lindblad.

Currently, Max Verstappen is the only Red Bull driver with a contract beyond 2025, although it’s impossible to imagine that Hadjar won’t be offered an extension soon.

Yuki Tsunoda has struggled at Red Bull since his promotion, while Liam Lawson has failed to match Hadjar since returning to Racing Bulls.

Lawson could lose his seat to Lindblad before the end of the season, with Helmut Marko notorious for making quick decisions on drivers if he believes they’re underperforming.

Whether Red Bull believe Lindblad would be better off completing his F2 campaign and then jumping into the Racing Bulls car when the regulations change in 2026 is yet to be seen.

However, it appears to be only a matter of time until Lindblad makes his Formula 1 debut.
