Max Verstappen’s recent hints at retirement have not gone down entirely well among Formula 1 team members.

After the Japanese Grand Prix, a frustrated Max Verstappen hinted at retirement, suggesting that he was not happy with the direction Formula 1 had gone in under the new regulations.

Verstappen reportedly has a three-month window to use the exit clause in his Red Bull contract, paving the way for a seamless departure.

SHANGHAI, CHINA – APRIL 20: Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Mercedes chats with Max Verstappen of Netherlands and Red Bull Racing in parc ferme after the Sprint ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of China at Shanghai International Circuit on April 20, 2024 in Shanghai, China.

Verstappen wants a return to pure racing, something he feels has been taken away with the recent change in regulations that prioritise hybridisation far more than the actual racing.

His exit from the sport would be a financial disaster for Formula 1. But there are some figures within Formula 1 who think Max Verstappen is leveraging his value as a driver to get the rules turned in his favour.

Max Verstappen’s retirement comments have ‘divided’ many in the F1 paddock over his true intent

According to a report by Motorsport Italy, Max Verstappen’s recent comments about contemplating retirement have led to a split within the F1 paddock.

There are some who believe Verstappen is playing a strategic game by threatening to retire, hoping to try and get the regulations amended to a level that he finds acceptable.

However, there are others who believe the possibility of Verstappen retiring shouldn’t be ruled out so flippantly, as he could easily follow through on his words.

Verstappen has several options on the table. He could outright retire, take a brief sabbatical from the sport, continue with Red Bull, or reopen negotiations with Mercedes.

Given the volatile nature of the situation, higher-ups across all teams are closely monitoring it while not ruling out any of the possibilities.

Max Verstappen could eye Miami Grand Prix as final test of his F1 future

With the Formula 1 season set to resume after an unexpected month-long hiatus, Red Bull have a lot riding on the upcoming weekend in Miami.

Red Bull have copied Ferrari’s innovations during this hiatus to try and close the gap between themselves and the top teams.

In fact, Verstappen even got the chance to test the Red Bull with these new innovations. However, there is no word on how he feels these changes can help the team’s performance going forward.

If the Miami Grand Prix turns out to be yet another difficult weekend for Verstappen and Red Bull, it could galvanise the four-time world champion to walk away from the sport the first chance he gets.
