Ferrari told two drivers would have done a ‘better job’ than Lewis Hamilton next to Charles Leclerc

Peter Windsor has told Ferrari that two current drivers would have done a better job than Lewis Hamilton next to Charles Leclerc in 2025.

But is it a fair assessment? At the age of 40, debuting with a new team was always going to be a risk for Hamilton. His drivers’ championship standing reflects that risk.

Although Ferrari’s car hasn’t exactly met their own high expectations, they would have expected more performance from their superstar signing.

Heading into the 2026 F1 regulations, they need to dig deeper than ever to find a solution for their woes, otherwise, a major overhaul could be on the horizon for the Scuderia.

Hamilton received an ominous Ferrari radio warning before a dramatic crash at the Dutch Grand Prix. There was little he could have done about it.

Despite a double retirement, Ferrari could take one season-changing positive from Zandvoort, as they pursue second place in the constructors’ standings over the final nine races of the campaign.

Ferrari told Oliver Bearman and Carlos Sainz would have done a better job than Lewis Hamilton in 2025

Ferrari’s biggest problem is now an ‘open secret’ and they’ll be desperate to turn a new page over the winter, starting with a completely fresh concept.

It’ll be led by relatively new Technical Director Loic Serra, who’s looking to bring a positive influence to their car following an extended time working with Mercedes.

It still doesn’t mask that Hamilton now has the record for the most Ferrari starts without a podium, and has been outshone by teammate Leclerc this year.

Peter Windsor believes that Haas’ Oliver Bearman and Williams’ Carlos Sainz would have delivered a higher level of performance than Hamilton in 2025.

“I never saw the point of it from Ferrari’s perspective, and I don’t see the point of it now,” he said on his YouTube channel.

“They could have Oliver Bearman in that car, they could have Carlos Sainz in the car again. They could have any number of drivers who would probably be doing a better job than Lewis now.”

Should Lewis Hamilton have stayed at Mercedes for the 2025 F1 season?

It’s hard to argue that much good has come from Hamilton’s Ferrari switch so far, and there’s a long way for them to go before they prove it was worthwhile.

At Mercedes, the Briton was set to be a lifetime ambassador and was going to receive the send-off he always desired.

However, he may not have achieved the long-term security he was after with his next contract. But, would staying there have been better?

For Kimi Antonelli, it would have been. He wouldn’t have been rushed into a top seat so soon and would have had time to develop.

Results-wise, Hamilton knew the car, and therefore probably would have been able to extract more from it than he has from the SF25. Instead, Hamilton faces a ‘tragic’ Ferrari situation.
