Haas F1 Team are one of the newest names on the Formula 1 grid after becoming the first all-American-led F1 squad for three decades when they, finally, debuted in 2016.
The FIA told legendary NASCAR team owner Gene Haas in April 2014 that it had granted him an entry into the pinnacle of motorsport for the 2015 F1 season. But Haas announced in July 2014 that his team would not debut until 2016 as they worked on setting up their operation.
Haas required more time to create a design and aerodynamics department in their NASCAR factory in North Carolina. The team also wanted to have a satellite headquarters in England, which they opened in Banbury. Haas also have a base in Ferrari’s famous Maranello factory.

Ferrari allocated Haas a part of their Gestione Sportiva complex as the teams share a special relationship. Haas buy as many mechanical parts off the Scuderia as are allowed in F1’s rules like the gearbox and rear suspension, but do their own chassis and bodywork development.
Team owner Haas and long-time team principal Guenther Steiner, who left at the end of the 2023 season, sought to forge a special bond with Ferrari to keep the costs of their Formula 1 entry down. It is legal as long as there is zero transfer of any Intellectual Property either way.
Haas signed a technical partnership with Toyota in 2024
Under the tenure of team principal Ayao Komatsu in October 2024, Haas also secured a new technical partnership with Toyota. It marked the Japanese automotive giant’s return to F1 in a design, technical and manufacturing tie-up with Toyota last involved with its team in 2009.
The partnership saw Toyota branding debut on the Haas car at the 2024 United States GP in Austin, Texas at the Circuit of the Americas. Toyota further provides Haas with expertise and knowledge plus its vast resources. But Haas continue to use power units taken from Ferrari.
Komatsu and Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda further viewed the tie-up as a way for Haas and Toyota to support Japanese drivers looking to reach Formula 1. It is a shared desire of theirs to help Japanese racers rise up from go-karts to the Formula 1 grid, likely via Super Formula.
Haas F1 Team name

Gene Haas simply chose to name his entry to Formula 1, Haas F1 Team, to keep the outfit in line with the Stewart–Haas Racing NASCAR franchise that he co-owned with Tony Stewart. The Haas F1 team have also taken on title sponsors since 2023, firstly through MoneyGram (2023-25) and also through Toyota since 2026 via the Japanese giant’s TGR racing division.
Haas F1 Team founding year
Haas F1 Team made their debut at the 2016 Australian GP with Romain Grosjean finishing in sixth place but Esteban Gutierrez retired after a crash. Grosjean had qualified P19 out of 22.
But Gene Haas founded Haas F1 Team in 2014 when the FIA granted their entry for the 2015 Formula 1 season. One of his first acts was to hire Guenther Steiner as the team principal in 2014, having already worked in the pinnacle of motorsport with Jaguar and Red Bull Racing.
Haas F1 Team current team principal
Gene Haas promoted Ayao Komatsu from his role as director of engineering in January 2024 to replace Guenther Steiner as the team principal of Haas F1 Team. Komatsu had worked for Haas since they debuted in 2016. Steiner left Haas in December 2023 as his contract ended.
Haas F1 Team current drivers

Haas F1 Team employ Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman as their Formula 1 race drivers. The US-owned crew signed Ocon to a multi-year contract starting in 2025 after Alpine chose not to renew his deal in 2024. Haas also signed Bearman to a multi-year deal from 2025 in 2024.
Bearman took a seat at Haas to graduate full-time from Formula 2 to F1 as the team reacted to Audi signing Nico Hulkenberg for Sauber. Haas ultimately also decided to field a new line-up after Alpine dropped Ocon, with Kevin Magnussen canned at the end of the 2024 season.
What F1 engine do Haas F1 Team use?
As part of Haas F1 Team’s special relationship with Ferrari, the American squad also use the Scuderia’s engine. Ferrari supply Haas their 067/6 1.6L V6 turbo-hybrid power unit for the 2026 season. Haas have only ever raced in Formula 1 with Ferrari engines since their debut.

Haas F1 Team factory base
Haas F1 Team have three factories with sites in North Carolina, Banbury and Maranello. The Kannapolis, North Carolina facility is the same facility that holds Gene Haas’ NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team. Haas’ marketing department also work out of the North American factory.
The Banbury, England site, meanwhile, forms a part of the UK’s Motorsport Valley with rival teams all working in close proximity to Silverstone, the home of the British GP. Haas run the Banbury base as the home for their vehicle performance, engineering and logistical duties.
Additionally, Ferrari allocated Haas a section of their famous Maranello factory to enhance the two teams’ partnership. It houses Haas’ design, aerodynamics and CFD departments as the American outfit must share a similar design with Ferrari owing to their bought-in items.
Haas moved their technical department into Maranello in 2020, having previously worked in Dallara’s factory in Italy. Haas have hired Dallara to build their chassis ever since their debut in the Formula 1 paddock. But their race team is based in Haas’ factory in Banbury, England.
