Nico Rosberg tells Red Bull what decision to make on Sergio Perez’s future after Hungarian GP

When Sergio Perez crossed the line to take the chequered flag at the Hungaroring, he achieved his joint-best result since the Miami Grand Prix.

Unfortunately, that was only a 7^th-place finish and added just six points to Sergio Perez’s tally for the season.

Another mistake in qualifying for Perez ruined his chances of earning the big result he desperately needed at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The 34-year-old had a huge shunt in Q1 and lined up alongside George Russell in 16^th and 17^th with both drivers hoping to progress through the pack at a circuit with a reputation for being difficult to overtake on.

Perez won his mini-battle with Russell to see which driver could score the most points from the back of the grid and Christian Horner was relatively pleased with Perez after the race.

However, there are still huge question marks over whether Perez will see out the rest of the season with Red Bull.

Speaking on Sky Sports F1 (21/7, 4:48 pm) after the race in Hungary, former world champion Nico Rosberg was assessing Perez’s future.

Red Bull could let Perez leave in the summer break due to performance clauses in his contract that he won’t be able to overturn during Sunday’s race in Spa.

However, while Red Bull have plenty of drivers to choose from in their roster, nobody stands out as an ideal candidate to replace the Mexican.

Unfortunately for Perez, he may have put Red Bull in a position where they would rather take a gamble than stick with a driver underperforming on a weekly basis.

Nico Rosberg gives his verdict on Sergio Perez’s Red Bull future

After the race, Rosberg said: “Red Bull, I mean in the first instance, the Constructors’ Championship they’re getting really nervous.

“At the moment that looks like that’s going to go McLaren’s way because they only have one driver who can score strong points. So, this is the first fundamental thing.

“And that’s only going to make it more difficult the decision with Perez.

“They almost need to take a chance now and see if another driver would do a little bit better because it’s worth taking a risk.

“Otherwise, it’s almost sure that they’ll lose the Constructors’ Championship to McLaren.

“And then the Drivers’ Championship, for now, it’s a little bit more comfortable but can become very nervous as well soon.”

Daniel Ricciardo lined up ahead of Liam Lawson as Sergio Perez’s potential Red Bull replacement

Sunday’s race at Spa could have monumental consequences for a handful of drivers in the Red Bull stable.

A strong race for Perez might just save him even if Rosberg has told Red Bull to make a change in the summer break.

Liam Lawson was originally expected to replace Perez should Christian Horner and Helmut Marko feel that they need to move the 34-year-old on.

However, Daniel Ricciardo has jumped ahead of Lawson to fill Perez’s seat despite not being the quicker of the two RB drivers this season.

It leaves Yuki Tsunoda wondering what he has to do to earn a promotion to the senior Red Bull team.

Tsunoda scored points again in Hungary, but senior Red Bull management are still left unconvinced by Tsunoda’s prospects of being Max Verstappen’s teammate.
