For the first time in more than a decade, a full-time Formula 1 driver is going to miss a race due to being awarded a ban.
Romain Grosjean had to sit out after causing a crash at the beginning of the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix and the following year a penalty points system was introduced to try and more fairly decide what punishments should be given out to drivers for their mistakes.
Grosjean collided with Fernando Alonso back in 2012 and shared what he told him after the crash that made him feel much better about the incident.
Kevin Magnussen is the man who will be sitting out of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after the Haas driver accumulated 12 penalty points over the past year.

It’s not a surprise that Alonso has also called the decision to ban Magnussen harsh given how he responded to Grosjean’s punishment all those years ago and the Dane wasn’t happy when he discovered he’d be missing out in Baku.
However, analysing the incident for Sky Sports F1 after the race, Nico Rosberg didn’t have too much sympathy for the 31-year-old.

Although the incident in question with Pierre Gasly was far from his worst infringement this season, it was similar to a collision in Miami that saw him pick up two penalty points.
Magnussen wasn’t the only driver to pick up penalty points after the race in Monza, with Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo also punished.

Asked about Bearman potentially coming in for Magnussen, Rosberg said: “Yeah sure, that would make a lot of sense, wouldn’t it?
“It would be an opportunity actually for Ollie to have a go and I mean Magnussen just has to learn at some point that he needs to take it a bit more easy.

“It just happens too often.”
Host Simon Lazenby explained: “His front axle was ahead but he had to go in and make those moves in a controlled manner and the stewards adjudged that that wasn’t the case.”
Oliver Bearman set for an early full debut with Haas in Baku
The result of Magnussen’s ban is giving a likely early debut for Haas to Oliver Bearman.
Bearman is the favourite to step up in Magnussen’s place with fellow reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi set to race in IndyCar in two weeks.

The British teenager performed admirably during his unexpected debut for Ferrari at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
He scored points in place of Carlos Sainz and that ultimately played a role in Bearman’s F1 promotion.
Bearman won the Sprint Race in Monza meaning he’s coming into the race in Baku in fantastic form.
Not only that, but he completed a perfect weekend last season on the streets of the Azerbaijani capital, taking pole position and winning both the Sprint and Feature Race.
He’ll be hoping he can use his previous experience on the tricky street circuit to give his temporary teammate Hulkenberg a run for his money.
