Mercedes staff say Ferrari aren’t so ‘super’ after all after emphatic Monaco GP win

Mercedes staff are ‘fed up’ with the idea that Ferrari have a ‘super’ chassis in 2026 after dominating them at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Ferrari were backed as the favourites at the Monaco Grand Prix, as their smaller turbo gives them a huge advantage on slow-speed corners and tracks. However, they did not claim victory, as Kimi Antonelli cruised to his fifth consecutive win in Monte Carlo.

Lewis Hamilton was second, while Charles Leclerc crashed at the final corner after the safety car restart. Ferrari were nowhere near catching Antonelli at the front, and Mercedes are growing tired of the rhetoric around both teams.

Is Kimi Antonelli about to run away with the championship, or will it be close?

Mercedes are ‘fed up’ with people saying their dominance is down to their engine and that Ferrari have a ‘super’ chassis

Jolyon Palmer compared Antonelli to ‘Sebastian Vettel in his prime’ with his performance in Monaco. He took pole position and led every lap, with his fastest lap being over a second faster than Hamilton’s.

Mercedes look to have the complete package in 2026, but the team are growing ‘fed up’ with people saying that their dominance is down to their power unit. The FIA seems to think that that is not the case, as ADUO declared Red Bull as the fastest engine.

The Brackley-based outfit are tired of people saying that their engine is winning them the title, and that Ferrari have a ‘super’ chassis. The Monaco GP disproves that, as Mercedes beat them with little competition.

Craig Slater discussed the situation on The F1 Show: “Talking about Mercedes and Monaco, a couple of guys there were saying to me, and I think they were a little bit fed up about the notion that, ‘It’s all about their power units and Brixworth is winning them the championship this year, and Ferrari have this super chassis.’

“Because obviously they won on a track which does not have a significant power element to it, in Monte Carlo. And I think even McLaren acknowledged this as well.

“That amid all the debate about being the engine customer and the works team knowing a bit more about how to employ that engine, even McLaren accept Mercedes have built a good chassis.”

Should Lewis Hamilton regret leaving Mercedes for Ferrari?

Even the Maranello outfit’s drivers admit that they are a way behind their rivals. Hamilton said Ferrari’s car is ‘so basic’ compared to Mercedes in Monaco – they have been afforded two additional upgrades for 2026 and 2027 through ADUO.

David Coulthard was stunned by Hamilton’s criticism of Ferrari, referencing how Alain Prost was sacked for doing the same. But it is clear that the team has a lot of work to do if they are to challenge for race wins.
