David Coulthard was left shocked as Lewis Hamilton appeared to criticise his Ferrari during their interview after the Monaco Grand Prix.
The seven-time champion equalled his best finish for Ferrari at the Monaco Grand Prix, finishing P2 behind winner Kimi Antonelli.
Hamilton has now leapfrogged George Russell into second in the championship standings, 66 points behind leader Antonelli. He has really hit his stride in Maranello in 2026, but he is not entirely happy with the car.

David Coulthard says ‘Oh my goodness’ after Lewis Hamilton’s gesture to his Ferrari after Monaco Grand Prix
The 41-year-old is much more at home in the SF-26 compared to its predecessor, but Ferrari are behind their rivals, Mercedes. Both Hamilton and Charles Leclerc criticised Ferrari during the Monaco GP, with the latter blaming the team’s brakes for his late crash.
Hamilton says Ferrari’s car is ‘so basic’ compared to Mercedes, and he appeared to gesture that his car was the problem for his struggles in 2026 when he spoke to Coulthard after the race.
Speaking about their interview on the Up To Speed podcast, the former McLaren driver was stunned by Hamilton’s gesture. He referred to how Alain Prost was sacked for criticising Ferrari, and could not believe that the Brit had done the same.

“Formula 1 is brilliant at finding solutions to technical problems, and this will just advance so quickly,” he said.
“But it is obviously frustrating for those that have these technical problems, and you can hear it in the driver’s voices.
“When I interviewed Lewis after the Grand Prix, and I said, ‘Where’s the main issue?’ and he sort of gestured over to the car.
“And I’m thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, how do you criticise a Ferrari?’ When Alan Prost, four-time world champion, criticised his Ferrari, he got fired.”

Ferrari set for ADUO boost
Despite his criticism, the Brit is optimistic about the future. In fact, Hamilton believes he can catch Antonelli and still fight for the 2026 title, despite being 66 points behind.
Ferrari could be about to receive a huge helping hand. The FIA has deemed them to be behind in power, and they are set to receive upgrades through ADUO.
They are more than 4% off the pace of the benchmark, Red Bull, and will be afforded two upgrade homologations. Mercedes will also receive one, as they are 2% down on their Milton Keynes-based rivals.
