Martin Brundle unimpressed with RB radio message to Yuki Tsunoda during Singapore Grand Prix

It was another disappointing weekend for the RB Formula 1 team after coming away from the Singapore Grand Prix pointless.

However, the biggest talking point for RB was the potential exit from the sport for Daniel Ricciardo.

Ricciardo finished last of the classified runners but did set the fastest lap and won the Driver of the Day vote.

That felt symbolic as it became clearer throughout the weekend that Ricciardo appeared set to be replaced by Liam Lawson for the final six races of the season.

The Australian’s future overshadowed nearly every other storyline at the Marina Bay Street Circuit except potentially Max Verstappen’s swearing feud with the FIA.

Fans watching on TV might not have realised that two drivers were racing for RB in Singapore and Yuki Tsunoda had a much better weekend than his teammate who understandably was the focus of the media’s attention.

The Japanese driver managed to reach Q3 but was unable to find a way to add to his points tally on Sunday.

Martin Brundle was commentating on the race for Sky Sports F1 and noticed one moment in particular on the 24-year-old’s team radio that left him very confused.

Tsunoda lost places at the beginning of the race after getting caught out by the brilliant move from Williams driver Franco Colapinto.

It meant he was following the young Argentinian and Sergio Perez as he battled for the final points-paying positions.

A message from his race engineer not only left him annoyed but confused Brundle as to what they were trying to achieve.

Over the RB team radio, Tsunoda was told: “Perez and Colapinto are fighting, there could be something coming to us. Let’s be on it.”

Tsunoda was far from impressed with this message and replied: “Too much information.”

Hearing that exchange, Brundle explained: “Yeah, I mean that’s a bit speculative isn’t it?

“And I don’t know if you really need to bother your driver with that do you?

“I mean, he’ll dive around the cloud or the confetti of carbon fibre pieces should something happen, I’m sure.”

Croft: “I’m sure he’s watching it very closely given he’s a second-and-a-half behind that particular battle out on track.”

Yuki Tsunoda furious on the team radio with Lance Stroll in Singapore

The Singapore Grand Prix provided plenty of talking points based on drivers’ communications with their teams throughout the race.

Anthony Davidson noticed the sombre mood on Ricciardo’s team radio towards the end of the race despite the Australian setting the fastest lap.

There was also the suggestion that Lewis Hamilton may no longer be involved in pre-race meetings given the nature of his communication with Mercedes.

However, Tsunoda made it clear that he’s not a fan of Lance Stroll after complaining about his position on the track during practice.

The pair came together at the previous race in Baku that almost immediately ended Tsunoda’s participation and Stroll retired later in the Grand Prix.

Both drivers are running in the midfield and are separated by just points going into the final six races of the season.

Tsunoda may not only have a new teammate to contend with at RB but also a more personal reason to score every point he can between now and the chequered flag in Abu Dhabi.
