Daniel Ricciardo has suffered a difficult Formula 1 season for RB and has so far been beaten by his teammate Yuki Tsunoda in the championship standings.

The Australian driver has failed to finish higher than eighth place in a Grand Prix so far this season in a tricky campaign.

Ricciardo has been the subject of much speculation over his future in Formula 1 after a difficult couple of seasons since leaving McLaren at the end of 2022.

The 35-year-old is getting towards the end of his career, and there are impressive young drivers, such as Liam Lawson, waiting for an opportunity in Formula 1.

Martin Brundle shared his understanding of Ricciardo’s situation at the RB team when speaking on Sky Sports F1.

Ricciardo has struggled this year and Red Bull have a capable talent in their junior programme in Lawson who performed admirably when called upon in 2023.

The New Zealander was chosen to replace the injured Ricciardo for five races last season and he scored a very impressive ninth place at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Lawson proved he is capable of racing at the highest level, finishing ahead of Tsunoda in the Dutch Grand Prix and Japanese Grand Prix when both drivers finished last year.

Brundle understands that Lawson will replace Ricciardo from the United States Grand Prix next time out at Circuit of The Americas. Ricciardo didn’t dismiss the rumours that Singapore could be his last event in Formula 1.

He said: “My understanding is that Daniel won’t be in the car in Austin at the next Grand Prix, but remains in the Red Bull pool. They want to see how Liam Lawson goes for a number of reasons, I would imagine.

“I think if Daniel had had a stronger season, it would have made a big difference, not just in the secondary team at RB, but in the primary team as well at Red Bull Racing. It’s not gone as well as he would wanted, but I don’t expect him in the car in Austin.”

Liam Lawson would be an excellent replacement for Daniel Ricciardo at RB

Lawson has delivered excellent results when racing in Formula 1 and his five-race spell proved he can race at the highest level.

The New Zealander has also come through the Red Bull junior team, which is the main purpose of the RB team to promote Red Bull’s young drivers.

RB would be a good team for Lawson to learn the tricks of trade outside the spotlight of the sharp end of the field with the opportunity to score points.
