The first practice session before the Singapore Grand Prix was frantic as drivers adjusted to the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Throughout the session, the track evolved, and the circuit’s bumpy streets and unforgiving concrete walls allowed for minimal margin for error.

Lance Stroll had a mixed session to kick off his weekend in Singapore. He set 21 lap times before ending up 15th fastest at the end of the hour.

The Aston Martin driver was not too far behind his teammate, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, just two tenths slower than the Spaniard.

Alonso’s teammate wasn’t very popular among the rest of the grid in the opening practice session, as free space on the track was difficult to find.

Yuki Tsunoda drove well in FP1 in Singapore, setting the fifth quickest time for RB, a car that has rarely has the pure speed good enough to challenge the top five this year.

The Japanese driver also went quicker than his more experienced teammate Daniel Ricciardo, who may be coming towards the end of his Formula 1 career.

Tsunoda was held up by Stroll in the closing stages of the session as the Canadian was driving very slowly on the racing line at Turn 7.

The 24-year-old was far from impressed, while Sky Sports F1 commentator Anthony Davidson joked that the pair aren’t the best of friends.

Yuki Tsunoda is racing in Singapore looking for his first F1 points since the Hungarian Grand Prix

Tsunoda has endured a challenging run over the past four races, failing to score a point as RB have been drawn into a battle for sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship.

The Italian team are now just five points ahead of Haas in the standings with seven races to go in the Formula 1 season.

Tsunoda suffered a difficult weekend last time out in Azerbaijan, making contact with Stroll on the opening lap before retiring from the race.

RB’s driver hasn’t enjoyed a good weekend in Singapore so far in his F1 career, retiring from the Grand Prix on both occasions he has raced on the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
