As pressure mounts on Sergio Perez to deliver better results, talk has turned to who might replace the Mexican at Red Bull.

Perez failed to score any points at the British Grand Prix following an error in qualifying that put him at the back of the grid and a strategy gamble in the race during the wet conditions that did not pay off.

He is now down to sixth in the Drivers’ Championship behind Oscar Piastri and is expected to be overtaken by both Mercedes drivers if they continue their upward trajectory.

Performance clauses in Perez’s contract were revealed which state that the Mexican cannot be more than 100 points behind teammate Max Verstappen before the summer break.

At the moment he trails him by 137 points, meaning the next two races are important in securing his short term with the team. Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, former F1 driver Martin Brundle has an idea of who he thinks should replace Perez.

Red Bull is not short on any talent, with two drivers from their Junior Academy taking wins at Silverstone over the weekend in Arvid Lindblad and Isack Hadjar.

Brundle thinks that a promotion could come from another established driver who acted as a stand-in last season and produced brilliant results.

“We sense Daniel’s under pressure for his seat, let alone being rewarded, moving up to the top team. Their F2 boys don’t look like they’re quite they won’t be ready for it. I think I put Lawson in it,” said Brundle.

“I put Lawson in it if they’re going to put anybody in it and see what he can do and try and manage his head down on it. He seems quite strong.”

Sergio Perez faces mountain to climb at upcoming F1 races

Whichever way it ends up swinging for Perez, he faces a massive hill to climb at the upcoming races in Hungary and Spa Francorchamps.

Hungary is known for being a circuit that is difficult to overtake which is why he needs to nail his qualifying performance or risk another race where he is left playing catch up.

The Belgian Grand Prix often throws up mixed conditions, which is an area that Perez has not excelled in well in the last few years.

Lawson will take part in a post-race tyre test with Red Bull at Silverstone, where it is expected that it will be used as an evaluation for whether he is good enough to jump in to Perez’s seat and improve their results.

Yuki Tsunoda is also an alternative if they wish to replace Perez but feel Lawson would not be ready for the switch, while Daniel Ricciardo is thought to not be in the running.
