Martin Brundle has said that an ‘outstanding’ Formula 1 legend who ‘nobody ever mentions’ should be in the GOAT debate.

Over the years, fans have been engaging in the age-old debate to decide which driver is F1’s greatest of all time

Names such as Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and Ayrton Senna have always been in the conversation.

Meanwhile, the likes of Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel have also been labelled as potential contenders.

Martin Brundle picks out his Formula 1 GOAT

Brundle, who raced for teams like Williams, Brabham, Benetton and McLaren during his F1 career, believes Hamilton is ’statistically’ the GOAT

However, the 66-year-old went on to name Senna as his choice, but did pick out one contender that he feels ‘nobody ever mentions’.

The name in question was Alain Prost, who won four titles in 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1993. He raced for McLaren, Renault, Ferrari and Williams during his career, securing 51 wins and 106 podiums.

In her new book, ‘F1 Racing Drive’, Sky Sports reporter Rachel Brookes wrote: “Martin Brundle believes Lewis Hamilton is statistically the GOAT; that is unquestionable.

“(Martin says) In many people’s eyes, he is the outright GOAT. But I am also impressed with the drivers who could find time from apparently nowhere. Michael Schumacher could do that.”

We’ve seen some intense feuds between teammates. But what is the greatest rivalry ever?

Brookes continued: “Martin’s years in the sport as a driver leave him with no doubt on who was the best that he faced.

“He explains, the greatest I drove against was Senna, I think he has a God-given talent that I haven’t seen in anyone else in quite the same way.

“Obviously, mathematically, it’s Lewis without question; he is in the conversation. I think Max Verstappen is in the conversation as the greatest of all time.

“I think also Fangio, Clark, Senna and Alain Prost, for example, who nobody ever mentions, Prost was outstanding, Nikki Lauda too, he was incredible the way he came back after nearly dying and won again. But, my choice is Senna.”

Fernando Alonso opts not to pick out one F1 driver as the GOAT

Although he is in the F1 GOAT debate, two-time world champion Alonso opted against singling out one driver.

The Spaniard, who is still racing in F1 at the age of 44, stated that he idolised Senna when he was growing up and also praised Schumacher’s work ethic.

Brookes added: “Can someone who others think should be on the list have a GOAT of their own. This is what he said. There are so many great drivers in Formula 1, so it’s impossible to say just one. I grew up idolising Ayrton Senna.

“But then I raced with other greats as well, Michael Schumacher, for example, was a really hard worker, even when he didn’t have a good car, he was always there. I will let others decide that, as I think everyone has a different opinion.”
