Despite being in command of proceedings halfway through the season, Oscar Piastri still found a way to lose the 2025 F1 title.

Failing to reach the podium at six consecutive events is what really hurt him, as McLaren began to run out of answers for his drop-off in pace.

Piastri staged a little recovery with two second places to round off the season, but it wasn’t enough to win him the drivers’ championship.

Heading into the 2026 F1 regulations, he has a big point to prove. There’s an argument to say that he’ll be even hungrier than his teammate.

Back at the 2015 Bahrain Grand Prix, during a discussion with BBC Sport, Lewis Hamilton detailed how Formula 1 teammates cannot afford to be friends.

Things have changed a lot over the last 10 years, but maybe it’s a bit of advice that Piastri could do with heeding in the future. That’s if he wants to be a ruthless operator.

“I think it’s difficult to understand, but there is no friendship between two teammates,” said Hamilton. “There’s only one championship. There’s only one first place, and you want it.

“If the other person gets it, that’s an opportunity for you gone. It’s very, very hard, because it gets so intense, it builds up.”

Is Oscar Piastri at the right team to be enjoying Formula 1 success?

Once an Alpine junior driver, Piastri clearly made the right choice for his future in 2022 by deciding to switch allegiances.

Although controversial at the time, with the teams on fairly similar ground in the midfield, McLaren have transformed back into a powerhouse.

McLaren have a special ‘back-up’ if Piastri leaves, but it’s hard to tell which team gives him the best chance at sustained success before seeing the new regulations.

The running order could completely flip, and McLaren could be back in the midfield soon. Who knows? It’ll be hard to tell, but for 2027, if his current team can’t offer him the chance to win, he could be on his way out.
