Karun Chandhok shares ‘infuriating’ Max Verstappen verdict after ‘utterly brilliant’ Sao Paulo Grand Prix win

After one of the most intense days of action in recent memory in Formula 1, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen stood on the top step of the podium at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Red Bull wouldn’t have held out much hope to end their 10-race run without a win at Interlagos.

Sergio Perez’s form has been a problem for some time and after his elimination in Q2, he failed to score points once again.

He’ll be feeling even more concerned about that after being out-qualified and then beaten by both RB drivers.

Max Verstappen knew he was up against it as well, also being eliminated before the top-10 shootout as well as having to take a five-place grid penalty.

What followed was one of the best wins in Max Verstappen’s glittering F1 career.

He made up seven positions before the end of the first lap, and while all of his rivals were spinning off the road around him, he held his nerve and pulled off some wonderful overtaking moves.

Verstappen got the better of Alpine driver Esteban Ocon on the final restart and drove off into the distance.

Karun Chandhok was commentating for Sky Sports F1 and was very much enjoying Verstappen’s performance.

However, it also reminded him that his misdemeanours in recent races feel so irrelevant when he’s capable of displays like that.

Karun Chandhok questions ‘infuriating’ Max Verstappen after brilliant Brazilian Grand Prix win

After being described as ‘absolutely unstoppable’ by David Croft, Chandhok said: “Well, he’s making a statement, isn’t he? Another fastest lap and his lead is now over 17 seconds which is same number as the position he started in.

“That’s a real statement drive. He doesn’t need to win, you get the same points if you finish one second ahead of 18 as he is now but this is a statement that he’s trying to make.

“This is some ways is the infuriating thing about those moments of road rage that we have seen in places like Mexico.

“He’s got more god-given talent to drive a race car in his little finger than most other drivers that have ever been in Formula 1.

“That’s why it drives you mad when you see those moves from Max which are on the edge of fairness and you just think, you don’t need to do that, you are an utterly brilliant racing driver and that’s the one we want to see more often and it’s on full display to the world today.”

Damon Hill left questioning Max Verstappen’s recent performances in F1

Verstappen looked unstoppable from the first lap at Interlagos, driving as if the track was completely different for him compared to his rivals.

He was slightly fortunate with the timing of the red flag that allowed him and the two Alpie drivers to leapfrog Lando Norris and George Russell who pitted just a few laps before.

However, Damon Hill has criticised Verstappen’s driving style recently after he was penalised twice at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

In dry conditions, McLaren and Ferrari have been faster than Verstappen in his Red Bull.

The torrential conditions levelled the playing field though, and that’s all Verstappen needed to become the third driver in F1 history to win a race from 17th on the grid.

Where Verstappen lost out to a red flag in qualifying, he benefitted in the race when it reall mattered.

All he needs now is a victory in Las Vegas to secure his status as a four-time world champion.
