Max Verstappen caused a lot of controversy when he went on an expletive-ridden rant during the Hungarian Grand Prix with his engineer Gianpiero Lambiase.
While the Red Bull pair are known for making sarcastic radio messages to each other, it appeared to be a strained relationship when Verstappen was heard complaining about a poor strategy.
The Dutchman’s race did not get any better when he collided with Lewis Hamilton while racing for the final podium spot, which prompted more complaints directed at the stewards.
Lambiase told Verstappen that he would not engage in potentially bringing a penalty to the attention of the stewards, branding his driver’s remarks “childish” in the aftermath.
Speaking to various members of the Red Bull team at the following race in Belgium, former F1 driver Karun Chandhok has revealed what each of them said in a column for Intercooler magazine.
Karun Chandhok reveals what Red Bull engineers told him about Max Verstappen
Verstappen gained some criticism for his remarks from fans on social media after the race, while the Dutchman was highly critical of Red Bull after the race when speaking to the media.
Chandhok says his engineers did not take offence to the sweary outbursts over team radio and instead believed that it is part of what makes Verstappen such an impressive driver to work with in the pit lane.
“It was a fascinating insight into the perfectionist that Max is. A week later in Spa, I spoke with the engineers and strategists on the receiving end of the rant and they said they’re all used to Max setting a high bar for himself and expecting the same from everyone around him.
“When they don’t meet his standards, he’s not happy and he makes it known. His team told me they viewed his passion for winning as a plus as it drives them all to be better.”
